Pigs Ear

AN INTRODUCTION

Pig’s Ear got together - musically speaking - way back in 1987. They started to play at folk clubs within striking distance of their Edenbridge/Tonbridge base the   following year, and are now established favourites at many local venues.

Their music is inspired by the traditional songs of the  British Isles, as sung in homes, fairs, taverns, workplaces and music halls rather than in courts and drawing rooms.

Whilst mainly “traditional” in style and approach, however, Pig’s Ear will sing just   about anything that they enjoy and feel will entertain their listeners including a number of self-penned songs. The current repertoire includes songs by Sue, Keith and Grant and is likely to include some by Lyndsey before too long.

Lyndsey’s song-writing talents are generally directed towards providing material for her alter ego, one half of duo London Road, with Chris Hilditch.

In addition to unaccompanied harmonies, Pig’s Ear play a range of instruments including guitar, Appalachian dulcimers, bouzouki, fiddle, whistle and a range of percussion. Since 1999, the original three part line up of Pig’s Ear has been augmented by Lyndsey on assorted recorders, flute, oboe and Northumbrian smallpipes, adding a new dimension to old favourites - and a fourth part to some of the harmonies.

The latest recording of the Pig’s Ear repertoire “Pig’s Year” celebrates 20 years of Pig’s Ear, and reflects their strong mix of traditional, self-penned and material by contemporary songwriters in the folk idiom.

Whether featuring one lead voice, all together in harmony or any combination of duet; whether accompanied or unaccompanied and whether the song is traditional, contemporary, or out of the home sty, PIG’S EAR make music that is varied and entertaining, often thoughtful, ALWAYS fun!

Oh, and why are they all called Rule?   Well, apart from being the Rules of the House - Keith is Grant’s brother and Grant is married to Sue, Lyndsey is Grant and Sue’s daughter, and Keith’s niece.  Confused yet....?
