DESIGN PROJECTS

2008 Florida Tech SAE Mini Baja Team Lead (Melbourne, FL)

January 2007 - July 2008

  • The SAE Mini Baja student competition simulates a real-world engineering project.
  • Students design and build a rugged off-road vehicle that competes against other teams for a fictitious contract with an engineering firm.
  • Participants at the 2008 SAE Baja Illinois competition with 94 competing teams. Placing number 28 in design, 15 in acceleration, and 21 in hill climb.
  • As Team Lead my main responsibilities were designing, analyzing, testing a strong and lightweight frame that would support all of the car’s subsystems, design and manufacture a robust and efficient drive train, and manage a team of 12 students. All 3D design done in Pro Engineer and dynamic FEA using ANSYS.
  • Geometry of the frame was designed after all subsystems locations were placed in an assembly.  A skeleton model of the frame was drawn ensuring proper system locations and overall car dimensions.
  • Analysis of the frame dynamically using load data gathered from testing.  Geometry was then optimized to keep weight as low as possible while remaining within a predetermined factor of safety.
  • Design of the drive train specifically for a Briggs and Stratton 10HP engine; a CVT was specifically tuned and a simple, lightweight and adjustable double chain reduction brought the power to the rear wheels.
  • Creation of a dynamic scheduling system in Excel to keep deadlines and responsibilities contemporaneous.

2007 Florida Tech SAE Mini Baja Team (Melbourne, FL)

January 2006 - June 2007

  • Responsibilities included the design and manufacturing of a suspension system to allow the car to handle well while maintaining speed over uneven terrain.
  • Utilization of a duel A-arm suspension system to allow easy analysis as a planar 4-bar, performed a three position analysis placing the optimal location of the shock, upper a-arm, lower a-arm, and steering rack to eliminate bump steer and guarantee the desired camber gain.
  • After geometry was defined the tube sizing and attachment methods were optimized using FEA.
  • Participants in 2007 SAE Baja Rochester, NY.

Robotics and Automated Manufacturing RoboGami (Melbourne, FL)

Summer 2007

  • Students programmed and design an automated system that uses Motoman Robotic arm to fold Origami.
