| Welcome to our class homepage! Second grade is a great place to be!! Here is where you can check for news about our class, assignments, and fun links to use at home. Check back often for updated information! Check out these sites for some exciting new academic activities for your child.
October has arrived and with it we have started learning many new and exciting things in room 15. We have been learning about ancient Egypt. We will also be studying ancient China in the upcoming weeks. The students have been assigned an Egypt project that is due on October 30th. Please assist your child with this project, but please keep in mind this is their project and their work. Refer to the grading rubric for grading guidelines. We have started our guided reading groups and the students are working very hard everyday. They are becoming experts at the Daily 5. They are working on their stamina and fluency everyday. Ask them about their favorite part of the Daily 5! In math we have been working on addition and subtraction strategies and story problems. Soon we will be focusing on place value, coin combinations, time to the half-hour, equivalent names, frames and arrows problems, and tally marks. Our next unit in science will be on changing seasons. Ask your child about using the laptops in the classroom. We will be making a switch and start using them on Fridays. Please use the links on the left to connect to helpful websites. The PTA newsletter is no longer being sent home in paper form. The last link on the left will take you directly to the newsletter or you can access it from the New Castle website. September is an extremely busy month in second grade and you can look forward to learning lots of new and exciting things as well as reviewing skills that were taught in first grade. Some of the topics we will cover this month include: Math- number sequence; counting coin combinations; reviewing months, weeks, and days; addition facts; grouping by tens- $1, $10, $100; using number grids; equivalent names for numbers; counting patterns; <, >, =; and number stories Language Arts- Students will be introduced to the Making Meaning curriculum to increase student's listening comprehension. They will also begin working on the Daily Five starting with Read to Self and Read to Someone. DRA testing will take place as well as word study assessments. Science- We will begin to explore the states of matter and the scientific investigation process. Social Studies- We will begin our exciting study of both Egypt and China. There will be an at-home project assigned with the Egygt unit.
