K.Y.D.A.

                                                       Keep Young Drivers Alive

The goal of K.Y.D.A. is to create an effective change to current graduated license laws in the state of Colorado.

We need to speak loudly to our lawmakers to mandate and enforce enhanced graduated license laws that WILL reduce teen traffic fatalities.

Fines alone won't stop the risk.  What teen wants to lose their license?  Taking away the privilege of driving WILL make a difference.

      • 83-87% of teen traffic deaths DO NOT involve alcohol or drugs.
      • 40% of traffic fatalities involve teen drivers 16-20 years old
      • Teen drivers are only 16% of the drivers on the road

Current Colorado State-imposed consequences:

FINES-

  • 1st offense- up to $50
  • 2nd offense-up to $100
  • Subsequent Offenses-$150

COMMUNITY SERVICE-

  • 1st offense-8-24 hours
  • 2nd offense-16-40 hours
  • Subsequent offenses-16-40 hours

LICENSE POINTS-

  • 2 for each offense

Proposed enhanced State- imposed consequences to graduated drivers license laws:

FINE-

  • 1st and 2nd offense-$500
  • Subsequent offenses-$1000

LICENSE SUSPENSION-

  • 1st offense-30 days

  • 2nd offense-60 days

  • Subsequent offenses-6 months or until 18 years old (whichever is later)

ADDITIONAL CONSEQUENCES-

  • 2nd and subsequent offenses-Driver Re-education

all offenses-parent or legal guardian would have a form acknowledging license reinstatement after the suspension period.

Any violation of the graduated license laws can end in tragedy,

no matter how "small" the infraction.

Never regained conciousness..died in trauma center

We were only going a couple blocks....

After being picked up at 12:09,

our lives were taken from us by 12:11...

in the span of only a few houses and  3  1/2 lanes of traffic .
