This class forms the core teaching for the Non-Canonical Gospels option of the Advanced New Testament Paper 6. The minimum enrolment is three students. See here for a basic list of recommended reading. The focus of the class will be to introduce the study of the non-canonical gospels in relation to the New Testament canon. The approach taken will be both historical and theological. We will contextualize these texts within the history of early Christian groups, their literature and theology. The aim is to develop a non-sensationalist, sympathetically critical understanding that will be deployed in class presentations and assessed essays. Students will prepare three class presentations related to the texts being studied; these presentations may then be used to prepare the two formally assessed essays (see the list of approved topics here). The Timetable for the term is as follows: Classes are held on Wednesdays, 2.00-3.30pm at Keble College, Room WL2.
