Back in Virginia

In January of  2005, Gene and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. We spent a week in Hilton Head, SC enjoying each other's company and reflecting on all the ways that God has blessed our lives.

Our son Will was seventeen at the time; he is an amazing young man. Our daughter Hannah was then fifteen; she is truly a beautiful person both inside and out. We have wonderful extended families, friends and a great church family.

In that week away, we also spent time thinking about long-range goals for our family. Since Will would be graduating from high school in June 2006, we thought that we should start planning what the next stages of our lives would be like, and what we would like to accomplish. We learned a few months later is that it is good and right to plan, but . . . we shouldn't be surprised if God intervenes and turns all "plans" upside down. In March, through Bible study and prayer, I began to feel that God was about to make some changes in our lives. Then it became clear that He was leading my heart toward adoption. Big Surprise! Though I dearly love children, I believed that our time for having children was over. God continued to nudge me toward this. I became excited and yet anxious at the same time. I wasn't sure that Gene would be ready for this news at all. So after much prayer and agonizing over what to do next, I finally told God that I was more than happy to do whatever He wanted for our family.

However, if this was truly His desire for us then- He could tell Gene. I told Gene that something big was up, but didn't tell him what.

One evening I was standing at the stove cooking dinner and Gene came up behind me, put his arms around me and said, " Kat would this thing that you feel God has been saying to you have anything to do with a baby for our family?" Yes, I fell apart! Tears of joy and amazement fell as I told Gene the whole story of how God had been directing my heart toward adoption. From that point on there have been so many confirmations. The biggest one for me is the unspeakable love that God has grown to enormous proportions in my heart for this precious baby.
