Happy Days in May!

In May the children started planting flowers and vegetables. The planters are out on the playground! The children care for the plants by watering and pulling weeds.  They also are measuring and charting the growth of the plants. The children have planted lima beans, carrots, tomatoes, eggplants, orange bell peppers, lettuce, grass, parsley, sunflowers, morning glories, butter weed, and wild flowers! We are now watching for humming birds, butterflies and any other creatures that may be attracted to our plants!

An easy project to do at home is to grow lima beans from seed!

~Place 2-3 lima beans between a wet, folded paper towel.

~The paper towel should be a few inches wide.

~Place the lima beans wrapped in the paper towel in a clear plastic bag.

~Hang the bag in a window that gets some sun.

~When the beans have roots take them out of the bag and plant then in soil.

~ You can experiment and try a few bags with different amounts of water in them  to see what amount works the best.         Have Fun!

The Bird Project starts this month!

A project is an in-depth investigation of a topic worth learning more about. The investigation is usually under taken by a small group of children with in a class, sometimes by a whole class.  The key feature of a project is that it is a research effort deliberately focused on finding answer to questions about a topic posed either by the children, the teacher, or the teacher working with children.  Interest areas, such as the science area and garden area will provide background knowledge for what interests them and gain familiarity with a topic so that they can think of meaningful questions.  When children ask their own questions, conduct their own investigation, and make decisions about their activities they are experiencing the joy of self-motivation learning.  The children will sit down as a group and take turns sharing information they know about birds and would like to learn about birds. After we have documented the information on a large chart we will start to investigate!
