Message from the President !

Well it's that time again when the days are getting shorter and the weather soon turns a little colder. We sure have had some great flying weather this month and the field is still in great shape and I would like to thank Al Cordy for all of his efforts this year in maintaining the field. In addition , I think congratulations are well deserved for Peter Conquergood on his third place finish at the US Scalemasters, quite an achievement considering Peter was flying against 46 of the best flyers in North America.
At this time I would like to remind you of the club meetings which will start again on the third Tuesday of every month. The first meeting will be on October 20th at 7pm at the hobby shop, Hobbies and Beyond. Please enter at the back door.  If anyone has any pictures or video of action at the field  please bring it to the meeting and we will try to ensure we share it with the members.

Hope to see you all there,

Fred

US Scalemasters Championship Report - 2009

posted Sep 22, 2009 7:41 AM by Peter Conquergood

News from our participation at the US Scalemasters Championships in Wenatchee WA.

Day 1
There are 46 registered, most in the Expert class with me.
The Red Apple Flyers have a phenomenal field.  A large, new, permanent clubhouse with running water, indoor toilets, shower, and a kitchen.  Outside are both a paved and grass runway, and 110 v power at each flight table.  WOW!!    They got all this through a land swap deal with a nearby landfill site.
Also great hospitality.
A good start - My static score is 98 !!.  The highest is 98.5.
My first flight did not go well - the engine lost a cylinder partway through my routine - so I had to land partway through for a score of 46 out of 100.
The second flight went much better, but I do not have the score yet.   Five flights are planned, with the best 3 counting.
The weather is great - maybe too hot - 86 F today and 92 tomorrow.  Very little wind.  The field is excellent, but the mountain in the background do tend to throw your perspective off.

Day 2
There are a number of other Canadians here, 8 competing, some as judges and some as observers - mostly from BC which seems to have a very active scale community.
Only one jet - which is a change for Top Gun.  Four flight lines operating, so the airspace is busy!  The weather is holding well - very warm today, but dry, and clear skies.
My second flight score from yesterday was 96.25 which was very encouraging.   Today's first flight scored 76.75 for a flight that I thought was almost as good.
There has been some muttering about inconsistent judging and apparently two judges from Friday were replaced.  However, I do not know which ones, or how that affects me.
At this point I cannot evaluate my relative standing.
I do not have my score for this afternoon yet.  One more flight tomorrow.  Only the best 3 count.
Meanwhile, we are having lots of good chats with the other modellers and learning some new ways of doing things.

Day 3
The final day -- My fourth flight score from yesterday was 89.75 - more promising -- but the heat was on to get a good flight today - I needed 3 good scores, and I only had two !!  Still very calm air - with only a slight breeze straight down the runway
I must have found some friendly judges as my final flight scored 92.75.
I ended up placing third overall, and the highest of the eight Canadians competing.
 A good feeling.

Top Gun Report - 2009

posted Sep 22, 2009 7:38 AM by Peter Conquergood

Here is a brief report of my Top Gun Experience this year.

My static score (50% of the total) was 96, up from 91.5 last year, so my improvements over the winter paid off.

The flying went well but not quite as good as I had hoped.   We had a bit of drama on Saturday morning.  As I started the engine, it would only run on one cylinder!  I had to about the flight and change the plugs.  Fortunately the rules allowed me to have another attempt.  That first flight scored a 77 (out of 100) due mostly to calling one manoeuvre and performing a different one !!

Later in the day I scored a 94  on the second flight.

As we were getting ready on Sunday, we had a bit more drama, the o-ring on the fuel filler valve disintegrated, so a quick change with the spare was necessary.  The first flight score of Sunday was 90.  The best three of the four flights are averaged and added to the static score.

On Sunday afternoon, the wind came up with a strong gusting crosswind and my flight was interrupted as a full size aircraft needed to use our runway, so I had to land, then takeoff again, and complete my routine.  Since four others also had to land and start again things were kind of hectic in the air for a while.  Anyway, I scored an 85 on that flight.

The end result was that I finished 7th, a definite improvement over 16th from last year, so I am pleased with the end result.

At the banquet on Saturday, I was presented a trophy for second place in "Pilot's Choice - Civilian Aircraft"

It was great having  my sons Dave, and Jon, and my brother Al  here.  We had a great time, and they were a fantastic support team.
