Hello and welcome to my cozy little space on the web. My name is Kavita Khanna and I migrated from India to Northern Virginia almost 17 years ago. I have an undergrad degree in Electrical Engineering from Pune's finest - College of Engineering (COEP). I got my Master's from George Mason University in ECE. For the last god know how many years I have been working in the IT industry. Inspired by my day-to-day interaction with such a wide medley of cultures from around the world, I finally ventured to write my first novel, Saturday Morning Omelettes, this year.

"Saturday Morning Omelettes" is my latest project - it is a MUST READ for all readers - Indian or not.

Book Description

Riya and Amit have an arranged marriage and Riya hopes that theirs will be a bond blessed by love and companionship. They wed in India, but financial problems in the family dictate a new life in America. Finding herself surrounded by the temptations of a society of affluence and consumerism, Riya watches helplessly as her husband slowly slips into a world of addictions. They return to India united, deeply scarred and irrevocably changed. Life proves to be neither predictable nor easy, and the author presents a finale as surprising as it is disturbing. Saturday Morning Omelettes is a colorfully woven tapestry of east and west. The struggles of young Riya and her husband have been subtly paralleled to the classic Hindu tale of Lord Ram and his passionate, troubled, and nearly tragic marriage to Sita. As the author reminds the reader throughout this novel, the epic is classic and timeless - beyond myth and culture.

Why did I write this book?

For a long time now - especially since the September 11 tragedy -  I have felt a growing urge to shed some light on the mystery surrounding people originating from India. Aspects of our family structure (arranged marriages, joint families, etc), clothing (saris, red dot on forehead, etc), and rituals (prayers, marriage rites, etc) have been woven into the rich tapestry of my east-meets-west contemporary family saga in a manner that will entertain and enlighten the non-Indian reader.

As for the Indian community, I have incorporated messages from the Ramayana in such a way that the youth of our community will learn about the profoundness and timelessness of the great epic in an entertaining way.

What others saying about it...

1. Ellen Tanner Marsh (NY Times Best Selling Author): Even though countless people from India have settled in countries all over the globe, the residents of their new countries oftentimes have little knowledge of Hindu culture. Thus they miss out on the richness and wisdom of a civilization that has prospered for millennia and continues to develop in exciting directions today. Kavita Khanna's new novel, Saturday Morning Omelettes, will certainly help to bridge the gap between people interested in learning more about Hindu life and the East Indians who are making new homes and new lives throughout the world. Her book tells the story of a young Indian couple as they journey from their native land to settle in the United States. Ultimately devastated by the temptations of Western living, they return to India to try to rebuild their lives. This poignant and engaging story of love, adventure, and sacrifice has many parallels with an age-old Hindu epic, the "Ramayan," a rich and culturally important tale involving kings, princes, regal succession, political intrigue, fatal heartbreak, malicious demons, an army of monkeys, and a festival of lights. Saturday Morning Omelettes will certainly be appreciated by Indians, if only for its fresh new perspective of the "Ramayan." At the same time, Americans and other non-Indians will gain a much greater understanding of Hindu culture, including the all-important family values, idol worship, and even arranged marriages. Without question readers will enjoy this modern story with its roots deep in the past.

2. Jen (Amazon.com reader): I loved this book!!! Once I started reading it I had trouble putting it down. You are immediately immersed in the life of Riya and Amit, two young adults both from traditional Indian families about to embark on a new life together. The descriptions are so wonderful that you feel like you are a fly on the wall watching their life together. The ending was a bit of a surprise, however looking back on the entire story it made sense. Beautiful!
