Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat), is located 18 km (11 miles) SE of Vienna. To and from Vienna Airport:
By Car
- from downtown Vienna to the airport: via Erdberger Lande to the motorway A4 (travel time approx. 25 min.)
- from the southern ord eastern districts of Vienna or Lower Austria via the city motorway A23 (Tangente) and then the motorway A4 (Ostautobahn)
- from the southern or western districts of Vienna to the motorways S1 and motorways A4 (travel time from exit A2 (Sudautobahn) approx. 20 min.
By Train
- from/to station Wien-Mitte by City Airport Train CAT non-stop, approx. 16 min.
- from/to station Wien-Mitte and Station Wien-Nord (Praterstern): S-Bahn (Federal Railway System - OBB), approx. 25 min.
By Bus
- from/to the center of Vienna (Schwedenplatz/ Morzinplatz) and other destinations in Vienna by Vienna Airport Lines. Time of travel, approx. 35 min.
- from/to the cities of Baden and Modling (south of Vienna and intermediate stops on the driving route) by Postbus.

Austria Customs
When entering Austria:
Each passenger (over 17 years of age) from non EU countries is entitled to import the following articles free of duty: Gifts of a value not exceeding approximately Euro 175, plus:
- 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 100 Zigarillos or 250 g of tobacco
- 2 l of wine
- 1 l of spirits with an alcoholic content exceeding 22% vol. or 2 l of spirits/aperitifs with an alcoholic content less than 22% vol. or 2 l champagne/sparkling wine/liqueur wine
- 50 g of perfume
- 0,25 l Eau de Toilette
Limits cannot be added for passengers travelling together. For example, you and another passenger are not allowed to import duty free an article with a value of Euro 300.
For intra EU travels limits are only valid for goods that were bought duty free. The duty free sales staff is obliged for control (e.g., that you cannot buy more than 200 cigarettes in EU duty free shops on presenting your boarding card. bei der Einreise nach ?sterreich) Items subjected to Austrian import restrictions: Protected species of animals and plants; you should also bear this in mind when buying souvenirs made of ivory, certain leather goods, potted plants, flower bulbs and corms, potatoes, salt.
When leaving Austria
Departure to non-EU countries: A refund of the Value Added Tax is possible when travelling to non-EU-countries. Refund of Value Added Tax/Departure: Non-Residents flying directly from Vienna to a non EU country are entitled to reclaim the Value Added Tax paid in Austria on goods purchased with a value exceeding of Euro 75.
If they are travelling via another EU-country (e.g. Vienna-Frankfurt-USA), the Value Added Tax can only be reclaimed in the last EU-country of their journey (e.g. in Frankfurt). To do so, fill in the tax-cheque completely when purchasing the goods. Check in as usual at your airline counter; then proceed to counter 75 in Terminal 1 or counter 23 in Terminal 2 (customs clearance) with your checked-in baggage (i.e. with the airline tag already attached) and your tax-cheque and present the purchased articles. Purchased goods which you are carrying in your hand luggage will be checked after passport control at the corresponding customs counter. You will be given a customs stamp to confirm that the goods have been exported. At the banks at Vienna International Airport your tax-free-discount will be cashed immediately - in any currency you wish.
Departure to EU-countries:
Whenever you fly to another EU country your privilege to purchase goods duty-free is guaranteed despite the abolition of customs checks. You are kindly requested to present your boarding card in the shop. Please make sure you are at the airport well ahead of time (for scheduled flights approx. 1 hour, for some charter flights 2 hours).
Passport Control
If you are travelling to a country that has not signed the Schengen Accord please proceed to the central Passport Control Point for Gates A1 to A19. For departures from C55 to C61 you will have to show your passport and boarding pass at the gate desk.
If you are travelling to a "Schengen" state, there will be no passport control. Flights to these countries depart from gates B22 to B43 and C51 to C62. Schengen Accord apply to the following EU member states: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain. There are no passport and customs controls at the borders between these states
