Seminars by me

Introduction to Machine Translation [B.Tech Seminar] (September 2007)

As part of my B.Tech curriculum, I gave an introductory seminar on Machine Translation (MT), giving an overview of the various approaches (corpus-based and noncorpus-based) being used for it and discussing the current state of the art.

Spoken Dialog Systems (October 2006)

I had conducted a seminar cum workshop on Spoken Dialog Systems during Tathva 2006 (our college's annual all-India technical festival). I gave a brief introduction about spoken dialog systems and then discussed about the various challenges involved in creating such a system. The rest of the seminar and the workshop that followed served as a tutorial for building a very simple spoken dialog system, which though not that intelligent, was still able to achieve the purpose of interacting with a computer using natural language dialogues. I taught the participants to use open source tools like Sphinx II Decoder, CMU-Cambridge LM toolkit and Festival TTS and Speech Tools to build the system.

An Investigation into the problems of Pesticide Pollution and A Case Study of The Kasaragod (Kerala) Endosulfan Tragedy (November 2006)

This was a seminar given by me in fulfillment of the Environmental Studies course in the fifth semester. I started the talk with a general introduction about pesticides and their usage trends in Indian agriculture. I then discussed the various environmental and biological problems arising out of the indiscriminate use of pesticides, and suggested various preventive and remedial measures to tackle the situation. I also presented the results of my case study on a district in Kerala, which was a victim of pesticide (Endosulfan) pollution.
