Karla's Story
In May of 2003, Karla Benitez (6 yrs old at the time) was
diagnosed with
neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer.
For months, she went through a rigorous treatment at
Children’s
Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. In February 2005, she received a bone marrow
transplant and within a few months she was cancer free.
Many people from the Hispanic Community have helped Karla with her funding for her treatment. In particular, the
Federation of Guerrero. They had help raise money for a previous cancer patient, Melanie Valdez, who died in 2003 before the funding could be use for her treatment.
She may have won her battle but the war with cancer was not over. In
January 2007, her cancer had returned, putting her once again in
hospital treatments and medications. This time
Comer Children’s
Hospital at the University of Chicago had taken her in to find a way to
relieve her of the cancer.

December 29, 2009, Karla passed on. We may have lost our beautiful Karla, but heaven has gained an angel.
".... her sister Leticia Benitez, remembers well that for Karla her priority was her family, and at the final moments she thought about her loved ones rather than herself. "She was mostly worried that her mom will be okay," says Leticia."
"She was a gift from God" - HOY January 5, 2010

".... su hermana Leticia Benítez, quien recordó que para
Karla lo principal era su familia, y que hasta el final primero pensó
en sus seres queridos que en ella misma. "Su mayor preocupación era que
mi mamá estuviera bien", contó."
