Statement 2009
Thinking and feeling by visual means seems more real and to make more sense than using words alone. The image feels more accurate in revealing emotional and cognitive processes trying to work in tandem.
This body of work has five components and is a narrative. I started by drawing and then went on to paint. I consider the resulting images as journeys I took.
Images are organized as sets: Conversations (16 drawings,) Jump (8 paintings,) Rose Suite (5 paintings,) Terra Incognito (4 paintings,) and AfterWorlds (4 paintings.)
The drawings are about conversations I had with key people in my life. I was trying to understand what I felt and what I thought during our conversations. I also realized my feelings and thoughts followed patterns and raised questions about my attitude to risk taking. It was then I resolved to paint what risk taking meant to me. I painted Jump first. The other "journeys" followed in succession as I continued to dig deeper.
Working this way allowed me to acknowledge feelings and beliefs about my sense of safety in the world. This work, therefore, links to present day Western, public, and private narratives of self analysis.
