Background

"Pes" means "dog" in Czech and Chodsko referrs to a region in the wet of Czech Republic .

Chodovregionen

The border between Czech Republic and Germany (Bohemia and Bavaria respectively) has ever since the 12th century been an important border since it was the only route for traders to import/export their merchandise.

The Chodove people was appointed by the prince to guard the Chodove forest and enjoyed certain privileges in return.
The border was patrolled like this from the 13th century up until 1620.

Evidence has been found that there was a well established breedingprogram in the 16th century. This decreased by and by and probably ceased entirely in the beginning of the 17th century when the patrols stopped.

The Chodove people kept their dogs of course and started (again) to use them as farm dogs - i.e. watchdog, shepherd and family dog.

The people of Chod is wellknown in Czech Republic since their national author Alois Jirasek immortalized them in his novel, "Dogheads".
Dogheads because of the silhuette of a doghead that appeared on their pennents and flags.

Their dogs were immortalized in their own right through numerous paintings and monument from the region.
The stylized doghead has for a very long time signified spirit of defense and patriotism for the Czechs. It has been used on the banner of (at least one) infanteryregiment (see example in the photoalbum).

When the World Organization of the Scout Movement chose the lily as their symbol, the Czechs immediately placed their dogshead over the lily as a symbol for the Czech scout movement (see example in the photoalbum).

The breed has, due to geographic and political isolation, survived to modern time with very small exterior changes.

1984 the breed was recognized by the CMKU whereupon the modern breedingprogram could begin.
1991 the breeders organization (KPCHP) was founded
1992 (?) the studbook was closed for dogs wihtout pedigree.
2001 the breed was entered to FCI:s standardcommitte for consideration but despite a positive preliminary respons, the FCI finally refused to recognize it.
