Access from Reno, NV: US 395 North CA 36 West CA 89 North to Lassen Volcanic National Park Drive Time: ~2:20 Brokeoff Mountain: I skinned up CA 89 briefly, then west towards Brokeoff Mountain and finally up its south face. I found the skinning difficult in steep sections because the snow was still frozen. I had a good view of Mount Shasta to the north and Mount Diller and Lassen Peak to the northeast. However, the sun was obscured by clouds and the winds high, so I abandoned the idea of waiting for softer snow. I descended the south face, then paused above a southeast-facing chute leading off of the face. Feeling good that I had just made controlled turns on the frozen snow, I decided to descend the steep chute. I measured the slope angle near the top to be 55 degrees and lower down to be 47 degrees. Upon reaching the apron, the snow softened and I was able to make big, fast turns.
