Karaoke Event Hosted by KALAGNY's Prosecutor's Committee

Prosecutors and friends of KALAGNY crooned the night away at the inaugural Karaoke Night event hosted by KALAGNY's Prosecutor's Committee on May 1, 2012 at Radio Star Karaoke. Members learned about about the newly-formed National Korean Prosecutor's Association which promotes the exchange of information between prosecutors in Korea and Korean American prosecutors throughout the country and about the National Conference in August. Click here to view pictures.

Discounted Immigration Law CLE for KALAGNY Members

KALAGNY in cooperation with the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York offered its members discounts on an Immigration Law CLE course on March 21 and April 18, 2012.

This two-part CLE program was uniquely designed to provide attorneys in all practice areas with a general overview of the laws governing U.S. citizenship & immigration. An experienced panel of practitioners addressed such fundamental topics as the role of the federal government in regulating immigration policy, family and employment-based sponsorship, visa petitions, permanent resident status, deportation, consequences of crimes and naturalization. The panel also highlighted many of the practical aspects and ethical concerns faced by immigration attorneys, as well as those matters specifically related to the LGBT community. Click here to view program brochure.

US-Asia Lawyer Cooperation Forum

On April 16, 2012, KALAGNY co-sponsored the U.S.-Asia Lawyer Cooperation Forum. Participants at the U.S.-Asia Lawyer Cooperation Forum, organized by the Asian Practice Committee of the New York County Lawyers Association ("NYCLA"), Dacheng Law Offices, and Troutman Sanders LLP, discussed the cooperation opportunities between U.S. and Asian lawyers and related topics under the background of economic globalization. A 50-person delegation of Chinese Lawyers and CEOs attended the forum. The forum was featured as a multi-angle exploration of the optimal strategy for lawyer cooperation in cross border practices and a platform for all participants to share ideas, explore future business and mutual growth potentials. Click here to view program agenda.

Private Showing of the Wedding Palace

Don Liu, Secretary and General Counsel of Xerox, Andy Hahn, partner with Duane Morris, and KALAGNY co-hosted a private showing of the Wedding Palace on March 28, 2012. The Director, Christine Yoo, a rising Korean star in Hollywood, attended the private screening and introduced the film. The comedy is about a Korean American wedding – the Korean version of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

KALAGNY Seminar: Immigration Fraud - Learn How To Protect Yourself And Your Clients

KALAGNY and its pro bono partner, Korean Community Services ("KCS"), hosted a panel discussion on immigration fraud for lawyers and members of the Korean community on June 1, 2011at the KCS office in Flushing, 35-56 159th Street, Flushing, New York 11358.

Panelists included: Brian Rodkey, New York County District Attorney's Office; Lois Booker-Williams, New York Attorney General's Office; Ricky Wong, New York City Department of Consumer Affairs; and Kathy Chae, MinKwon Center for Community Action. Suyon Yi, Esq. was the moderator. Panelists discussed current trends in immigration fraud, ways to recognize possible fraud, the consequences of being a victim, and where to turn for help.

*As part of KALAGNY's commitment to the Korean community, KALAGNY hosts periodic seminars to address issues important to the community. KALAGNY will also be holding a monthly pro bono clinic on the first Tuesday of every month commencing in July.


KALAGNY Announces $1000 Law Student Scholarship 
KALAGNY sponsors an annual Law Student Scholarship Award in the amount of $1000. The scholarship will be presented to the winning law student member at KALAGNY’s upcoming 25th Anniversary Gala on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the Harvard Club in New York City. The scholarship will be given to the law student member who has demonstrated the most outstanding commitment to and support for the Korean American community in Greater New York and who exhibits dedication to use his/her legal knowledge and skills to continue this commitment and support. On May 24, 2011, KALAGNY's Andy Hahn, partner at Duane Morris LLP, received 

the New York City Bar's prestigious

 "Diversity Champion Award." Mr. Hahn received the award at the City Bar's Sixth Annual "Diversity Champion Award Luncheon." The award recognizes the critical role individual attorneys have played in initiating and sustaining change within their organizations and the overall New York legal community. CLE: Immigration Relief for Survivors of Domestic Violence
 
KALAGNY members participated in a free 4-hour CLE course for lawyers and non-lawyers sponsored by CUNY and Queens Legal Services on April 15, 2011. The class provided attorneys with an overview of each type of relief available to survivors of domestic violence. Participants are now eligible to take on pro bono immigration cases under the supervision of  Queens Legal Services after the training.  

CLE: Estate Tax Update

KALAGNY in association with AABANY, Wells Fargo, and Landstar Title Agency, Inc. hosted an Estate Tax CLE on the Impact on Domestic and International Planning. The CLE was held at Wells Fargo Securities in Manhattan on Wednesday, April 6, 2011.

On January 25, 2011, KALAGNY held a career development panel discussion at Herrick, Feinstein LLP, aimed at providing associate-level attorneys and law students with insights on navigating a career in the private sector. The panel consisted of a group of law firm partners and in-house attorneys, who have pursued a diverse set of career paths, as well as the managing director of a leading legal recruiting firm.

KALAGNY supported the annual Mela event hosted by Rutgers Law School's Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA). On October 7, 2010, the Rutgers APALSA welcomed students, faculty, and members of the legal profession to commemorate Asian Pacific American achievements in the legal field. The keynote speaker was Phillip Kwon, First Assistant Attorney General of New Jersey. The honoree was Dean Ronald Chen, Vice Dean of Rutgers Law and former New Jersey Public Advocate. The event featured an Asian dinner buffet, open bar, cultural performance, and music.

APA Heritage Month 2010: "Blazing a Trail in the Law"
On May 27, 2010, KALAGNY co-sponsored with the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY), an event at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, in which Rocky Chin moderated a conversation with pioneers and trailblazers in the Asian Pacific American community. The panelists discussed obstacles they faced and triumphs they experienced as they blazed trails in various sectors of the legal profession. Panelists included the Honorable Denny Chin (United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit), Sharon Hom (Executive Director, Human Rights in China), Norman Lau Kee (Partner, Kee & Lau-Kee), Chanwoo Lee (Law Office of Chanwoo Lee), and Hon. Jaya K. Madhavan (Supervising Judge, Bronx County Housing Court).

On May 19, 2010, the KALAGNY Women’s Committee hosted an event for members that included dinner at Thalia followed by the Broadway musical, “Promises Promises.”

Power of Attorney CLE
On May 12, 2010, KALAGNY co-sponsored with the Asian American Bar Association of New York, Citibank, and First American Title Insurance Company a CLE entitled Planning with the New Power of Attorney: with a focus on Medicaid and Estate Tax Planning.

2010 KALAGNY Golf Clinic 
Members brushed up on their swing at a KALAGNY-sponsored golf clinic at Chelsea Piers on Thursday, April 29, 2010. The clinic included instruction from Chelsea Piers Golf Club Professionals. Members then enjoyed a few drinks at the Chelsea Brewing Company.

General meeting

KALAGNY held a general membership meeting on March 25, 2010 at Kang Suh restaurant. Members enjoyed delicious food and friendly company at the meeting.

"Getting Started in Estate Planning"

KAYF Law Forum
On Friday, March 12, 2010, KALAGNY Board Members Chad Sjoquist, Kenneth Cho and Susan Moon participated as panelists with Brian Lee in a Youth Law Forum sponsored by the Korean American Youth Foundation. Citizenship Program
On October 31, 2009, KALAGNY and the Korean American Community Center of New York ("KACCNY") co-hosted their 8th pro bono service program for naturalization application processing. Together with KACCNY, KALAGNY has assisted in the processing of more than 200 U.S. citizenship applications during the past 2 years.

KALAGNY Honored At KACCNY Dinner
KALAGNY received the "Community Service Award of the Year" from the Korean American Community Center of New York (KACCNY) at KACCNY's 10th Anniversary Gala on October 27, 2009, at Dae Dong Manor in Flushing. KALAGNY members Alice Y. Cho, Yohan Choi, Zena Kim, Jadyn Koo, Jeremy D. Sung, Suyon Yi, Charles M. Yoon, and Min Zu received individual recognition for their pro bono activities. KALAGNY also received a "Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition" signed by Congressman Gary L. KALAGNY held a pro bono legal clinic on June 13, 2009 offering free consultation in Family Law, Commercial Law, Foreclosures, Bankruptcy, Criminal Law, Labor Law and Immigration. The event took place at Hyo Shin Bible Presbyterian Church.

Kim S. Hahn Scholarship Golf Benefit
On October 18, 2008, KALAGNY collaborated with Nexgen Foundation, Inc. to hold a golf benefit at NY Country Club. Net proceeds were donated towards the Kim S. Hahn Scholarship Fund.
 
2008 Citizenship Day
KALAGNY members hosted the annual Citizenship Day on April 19, 2008. KALAGNY members along with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the City Bar Justice Center, the Brooklyn Law School and the YWCA of Queens offered a free legal workshop providing assistance and advice on becoming a U.S. Citizen. The workshop was held at the Brooklyn Law School and at the YWCA of Queens.

2008 Gala Dinner
KALAGNY held its annual dinner at the New York Marriott on January 17, 2008. Korean Ambassador Hyun Chong Kim (Columbia Law School ‘85) was the keynote speaker. That evening, KALAGNY honored trailblazers Michael S. Kim of Kobre & Kim LLP and Andrew T. Hahn, Sr. of Seyfarth Shaw LLP and 2008 NAPABA president-elect.

Legal Writing CLE
On November 7, 2007, KALAGNY sponsored a free CLE on "How to Write A Winning Legal Brief." The CLE featured the Hon. Gerald Lebovits. The event was held at the offices of Seyfarth Shaw LLP.

Reception Honoring Judge Gil Hong
On September 27, 2007, KALAGNY held a reception to honor Judge Gil Hong. The reception was held at the offices of Seyfarth Shaw LLP, which sponsored the event. Gil Hong is a recent addition to the New York State bench.

KALAGNY's Immigration Law Seminar
On September 22, 2007, KALAGNY conducted a comprehensive immigration law seminar for the Korean community. The event was co-sponsored by the Korean American Association of Greater New York and the Korean American Association of Manhattan. The event was held at the Open Center (formerly known as Seoul Plaza), located at 150-24 Northern Blvd., #A4, Flushing, New York.

The speakers were all prominent immigration lawyers including Richard An (KALAGNY Immigration Law Committee Chair), David K.S. Kim of Bretz & Coven (KALAGNY VP and CLE Committee Co-Chair), Susie Kim of Troutman Sanders (long-standing KALAGNY member) and William Bretz of Bretz & Coven, LLP. The speakers addressed “hot” community issues such as the increasing incidence of immigration fraud and ways to avoid being defrauded; the New Social Security No-Match Letter Regulations; What to do When Detained by ICE; and the Dream Act and Other Future Legislations.

2007 Golf Outing
On June 23, 2007, KALAGNY held a golf outing at the River Vale Country Club in New Jersey. After 18 holes of golf, participants enjoyed dinner at the country club.

KALAGNY Celebrates Asian Heritage Month
In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York and the Asian American Bar Association of New York sponsored a reception on May 24, 2007 at the New York County Supreme Court, Rotunda.

KALAGNY honored some of New York’s leading Asian American civic organizations: Korean American voters’ Council, Young Korean American Service Education Center, Chinatown Voter Education Alliance, Chinese American Voters Association and Chinese American Voters Federation. The event featured Professor Madhulika Khandelwal, the Director of the Asian American Center at CUNY Queens College, as the keynote speaker. Attendees also enjoyed performances by the Chinese American Planning Council’s Open Door Seniors and NYU Rhythmic Impulse (traditional Korean drummers).

2006 Annual Dinner
KALAGNY celebrated its 20th anniversary at its annual dinner on November 30, 2006 at the Princeton Club. The Honorable F. Dana Winslow, then President of the New York State Supreme Court Justices’ Association, was the key note speaker. The Honorable Edward R. Korman, Chief Judge of United States District Court, EDNY, attended as an Honoree.
