Just In Time (JIT)

JIT is dedicated to one simple idea:

          The Manufacture of

§         What is needed

§         When it is need

§         In the Quantity that it is needed.

The factory floor is focused by incorporating linked manufacturing cells with minimum in-process inventory and a pull system for inventory control.  By establishing flow production and working to implement it at its basic level (one-piece flow), we can expose many problems that exist on the floor, then work to solve these problems as they become apparent.  Elimination of waste -  non-value added operations – from the floor produces a leaner manufacturing system, one capable of responding to change in the most flexible manner possible.

By the same token, flow manufacturing also exposes quality problems when they occur, or immediate action and more efficient countermeasures.

If JIT is realized in the entire firm, then unnecessary inventories in the factory will be completely eliminated making stores or warehouse unnecessary.  The inventory carrying costs will be diminished and the ratio of capital turnover will be increased.  In addition to the above-mentioned, the wastes and process lead-time will be reduced remarkably.
