Gale

Introduction
Gale's introduction pages are actually a messy set up for The Cat Burglar Blunder(shown below), where the misplaced artifact is 'misplaced'. The intro pages are inconsistent because I wasn't happy with the room design and wanted to change them for the collaboration with Angie, but it was a good try. Looking back now, I should have stuck with that design.

- A few collective days to sketch, took way longer than it should have.

- Introduces Vicky
The Cat Burglar Blunder
In the Cat Burglar Blunder, Gale has not actually made his first appearance in Void City, he doesn't live within Void City limits, and has probably never heard of it. But, in the course of the story he is introduced to Angie, who he doesn't want to take seriously at all and for most of the story doesn't even try. Despite the fact that Angie is stealing from him, he treats her the same way he treats most young ladies (and anyone more than a foot shorter than he is), with a lot of silliness. And it doesn't seem like he cares that she is ultimately going to leave with a piece of his private collection, he's more interested in making her visit to Elwood Estate as annoying as possible.
Eventually, they part ways without even learning each other's names.

- 2 1/2 months to complete.
- Setting up Gale's eventual first appearance in Void City.
- Lays the foundation for a possible second encounter in the future.

Carolyne Reigne: Unlike Gale, Cara's battles follow no particular storyline and go in all directions with no real connection. They were a learning experience and it shows that I definitely had a lot to learn. I still do.

Battle One: Mikal vs Carolyne Reigne
I'm still proud of some of these panels, it was my first battle and I think because of that I tried really hard. I tried to make this short story more interesting by picking and choosing angles. I know now that sequential panels don't just 'look cool' because the artist wanted to draw them that way, they're storytelling tools that require practice and educating yourself on how to use them. This is also back when 'shy-dog' was still 'kae-dog', a more traditional werewolf-like canine. My writing was terrible. I'm proud of the art, but I'll never make claims to be a decent writer!

- 3 weeks of drawing time.
Battle Two: Mr. Kick vs Carolyne Reigne
Unfortunately Johnny Go Go (Mr. Kick's artist) 'defaulted' on this battle. Meaning that though he may have done some work, it didn't meet the minimum page number to be posted. So what we have here is a very short three page story. I was pressed for time on this battle and was obviously shooting for humor. Again, still looking at kae-dog. This is still before I changed Cara's design.

- 1 week of drawing time.
Battle Three: Harappa vs Carolyne Reigne
I was trying to show more of Cara's personality but I don't think I was very successful. Cara has a tendency of showing up very bland in my art. At the time I couldn't get the version of her I was seeing in my head to go into my writing and art (which I later realized was a lack of expression and the stiff writing style I'm STILL trying to break out of today). This battle is a good example of why I don't put a lot of thought into my winning streak on Void, I think Harappa deserved this win but didn't get it. She obviously (to me) put some work into her half.

Battle Four: Romero vs Carolyne Reigne
I think by this time I was definitely starting to show improvement in some areas, but there's still a lot going on that cuold have been done so much better. (For instance, I was a little clueless on what a flashbang really does when it goes off). Seeing as I had only 2 weeks of drawing time I think I did very well for the work level I was at in 2006. I worked hard on this battle and it was probably one of my favorites (errors aside).

- 2 weeks of drawing time
Battle Five: Kubo vs Carolyne Reigne
This battle probably should have been more like battle three. It was done prior to a few of the others and sat finished for a long time waiting for Kubo's artist to come back from a hiatus. So it's actually a step backwards in the middle. A very poorly written step backwards. The third character here is Kure, who I wrote completely out of character. Fortunately, I got to have another go with him later and did better (though not nearly good enough to redeem myself after this). If I could disown any of my battles it would probably be this one.

- The official time slot says 1 week, in reality this battle took several weeks for me and months of waiting.
Battle Six: Jira vs Carolyne Reigne
I remember trying to do story sometimes during these battles because I wanted there to be a connection, and I wanted something to be going on. Off the battle scene I had been talking to some of the other artists and Cara had joined a Void group that we affectionately called 'Mal's Diner Crew'. Jira was part of that group, so prior to this battle (and though it barely been accounted for in art at the end of my battle with Romeo) Cara and Jira had some history which randomly shows up here. Although with a giant metal cat skeleton that just... has no business being there at all.

Battle Seven: Kure vs Carolyne Reigne
I think I can safely say this is my favorite battle from my time on Void. You'll find me gushing on Kure's work sometimes and that's because he has natural talent for putting together a good story (maybe I'm biased because I like voo doo, I don't know. I think he's honestly a talented writer). Looking back I think this should have gone up as a beyond battle, I didn't much like the idea of one of us winning or losing because truthfully this is Kure's story, not mine. It was the first two part battle I ever did that actually fit together in a recognizable way. In spite of the fact that Kure drew Cara naked for more than half of his.
We've also suddenly got the first appearance of shy-dog and kae-dog is put to rest. (With no explanation whatsoever. Oops).

Battle Eight: Mushroom Man vs Carolyne Reigne
This is another one that I really enjoyed, I think I could have done better but I still like the story. Mushroom Man has a very interesting design and I enjoyed working with it. This is the first time Cara appears as a crow. I never explained why the crow speaks differently from Cara's other forms and I should have, but as said, I make no claims to be a good writer. It's hard to tell what the story is about, but to sum it up Cara had a dangerous allergy that she needed pills for.

Battle Nine: Aesimi & Beethoven vs Carolyne Reigne
Two years and nine battles later I finally suffer my first lost at the hands of Aesimi and Beethoven. Who deserved their win after dealing me a proper, hilarious ass kicking. This was the first time I decided to bring Rublu to Void. He had been sitting on the sidelines for the entire two years and had never been used. I was trying new things and especially trying to use new expressions. I enjoy this battle because I think it marks the time when I finally cut lose with Cara and tried to do something with her that wasn't so bland.

- 4 weeks of drawing time.
Battle Ten: Aesimi & Beethoven vs Carolyne Reigne
Lastly, my most recent battle with Cara that happened in late 2008, this was also my first battle after a nearly 12 month hiatus from Void, before I swapped characters to Gale. Cara returns to Void with some minor personality tweaks and longterm appearances by Rublu (should there be any more battles).
I think being on Void has been beneficial, I'm very glad I spent all the time that I did teaching myself new things and learning from the other artists, and I hope to continue to battle with Cara in the future.
