Race: Human, with spiritual residue from a creature known as a Hhoota. Occupation: Some underworld politics at home,
historian. He's old and wealthy enough that he can pretty much piddle
around in mock-retirement. Personality: Sweet-natured and trouble-making, Gale acts like a quirky old grandpa or uncle.
He has no blood-relations, but he takes pleasure in his surrogate
family, often extending his good-nature to strangers. Most people, even those within
his surrogate family, don't realize he's anything but a silly old man in his fifties with nothing better to do but pester younger people.
|
Physical Description: He has ripened to an old age and shows all the signs of a man who has
been tested by time. He does a lot of smiling and very rarely looks
annoyed about anything. Sometimes he keeps his beard, most of the time he doesn't.
He is not missing any body parts but his torso, some of his back, and
a portion of his face, arms and legs have burn scars.
He does have tattoos that are rarely visible and theraputic in
nature, he has tattoos over his heart, on his right knee and hip, and
on his stomach. Usually they are all covered by clothing. He also has a pretty decent build not expected of a man his age.

A Brief General History
Gale's actual age and identity are a matter of question. He changes his name and legal identity on a regular basis and
'Gale Elwood' is just the most recent. It's a corny name, he knows it, he probably made it corny on purpose.
Sometime during the first 60 years of his life he merged
with an ether-eating, horse-like creature known as a Hhoota, most likely on his death bed. It
is the merge with the Hhoota that makes Gale what he is now, extends his
long life, and gives him his natural ability to craft magical
energy. That has allowed him to become the object of power that he is.
Though his power is never practiced.
He has spent most of his life learning. He has done many things in many places and has
gone through many life phases. Some of which he isn't proud of. Many he doesn't remember.
Hibernation
He sleeps periodically to break up the monotony of living. The length of his hibernation may stretch from ten to a hundred years. As such an old person, sleeping like this has kept him sane.
A Little Recent History
His most recent hibernation ended during the American Civil War, where
he was awoken by accident and held captive by confederate forces. During this time, he relearned English
(which had changed dramatically from the time of his sleep to the time
of his waking). After the war he set out to retrieve his past possessions and rebuild his life from the ground up.

| The Hhoota
Gale and the Hhoota are now mostly the same entity. However,
Gale considers the form to be too chaotic to safely, physically take. The Hhoota only appears in dreams and in spiritual nature.
By nature the Hhoota side of him is somewhat predatory of other
ether-based creatures and fiercely territorial in the presence of
similar mythological horses, such as Pwwka or Kelpie. Gale has learned
to control these urges, and if they cannot be controlled, to walk away.
In it's dream-state, Gale finds the Hhoota mostly within his control but still dangerous.
Mage-Craft
It is highly unusual for Gale to take part in any sort of mage-craft.
He seems to think his life is less complicated without
it. The two crafts he is most likely to use are metal craft, and
psionics. Most of the time he won't give any indication that he knows
any sort of 'magic', and likes to appears as a plain old man in his
fifties. If asked, he would probably be honest, but to his luck no one
ever inquires. As it stands, there are only a handful of people who
know him for what he is.
Daggit Switch
He currently resides in a fictional city known as Daggit Switch
which rests on an island South of Long Island. His
daytime personality is known as 'Elwood' and is very involved in the
inner-city historical community. He spends most of his day time at the
museum, hiding in his office.
On very rare occasions and under special circumstance he
partakes in the underworld politics of the city. Daggit Switch is
rich in other-worldly creatures.
Elwood Estate
Gale's home is, like himself, a tremendous cliche. He owns a cozy
mansion nestled near the outer edge of the island. It has a forest like
atmosphere and looks peaceful.
Within the house he keeps his journals, which are accounts of his life
in most of
it's phases, good and bad. His journals and other books acquired by him
line the halls and rooms, and the house hosts several large and small
libraries. Some doors are always locked and their contents left largely
unexplained, but it's presumed this is where he keeps the artifacts he
deems 'dangerous' or things he otherwise doesn't want visitors milling
around in. Maybe it's just where he hides his saltine stash.
House-Mates
Within the estate are several live-ins and companions that come and
go. Two of them are Vicky and Pee, a gryphon and a bird-like magic
construct with a child-like mentality. Both are male.
These two rarely leave the house but it is not unheard of for one of them to be in Gale's company when he leaves.
The third is Marv, Gale's semi-live-in aide. Marv helps Gale with
technology, and takes tentative care of the artifacts and books. |
The Pendulum Gale carries a spin-top shaped pendulum on a narrow chain and keeps it in his pocket or tethered to his belt at all times. He is only very rarely found without it. It's black and gray and small. It also appears to be made of metal.
The pendulum doesn't appear to have any magical significance and if it ever did it has long outlived it's purpose. He treats it like a toy and will use it as a spin top if the thought occurs to him. It's only practical purpose is for entertainment and occasionally as a meditation device to pass the time.
He shamelessly treats it like a yo-yo.

Drawing Gale If you have a character of your own, then you may share the feeling that there is really nothing more rewarding than the thoughtful gestures made by another person that let you know they like your character too. For that reason I maintain a small gift art gallery on this site. I frequently commission other artists to draw Gale, and I frequently receive gift art from friends and passers-by. This block of Gale's page is specifically for artistic reference. In the future I will add a little more but in the meantime here are the basic details.
- It's fine to draw him with or without his beard. I often envision him without but I enjoy both versions. Sometimes I may specify otherwise.
- I usually commission an artist because I enjoy their style, if you look at Gale's gift art gallery you can see that there is a lot of variation. Draw in the style that makes you happy!
- Unless I've specified otherwise, you're welcome to draw him in whatever style of clothing you'd like. Most artists choose his mage coat (show to the right, and in several places above) but I don't hold them to it. Long coats and pants are popular, so are boots. He frequently wears a bowler hat and walks with a cane.
- It's fine to draw him with other characters (even yours). I enjoy character interactions immensely.
- I'm not a picky commissioner. If you don't get it quite right I will love it regardless, but I reserve the right to giggle! (Gale's design makes him look really effeminate in some styles, and I laugh).
- I don't post all of my gift art in my gift art gallery. The art I post there has a finished or 'unique' quality. For instance I may not post a single doodle of Gale's head, but I may post a full page of them by the same artist. I'm sorry to say that an image does require a certain amount of skill or character to enter the gallery.
