Welcome!

Tent #36 is named after Mrs. Kady Brownell, a vivandiere who served in 1st and 5th Rhode Island Infantry, had the distinction of being the only female member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.)* in 1867, and was awarded a pension by the United States Government in 1884 for her service during the Civil War. Welcome to our website! We’re so glad that you decided to stop by and learn more about who we are and what we do.

The ladies of Kady Brownell Tent #36 DUVCW take great pride in our shared heritage and our service to our local community. We are direct lineal descendants (daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and so on) of honorably discharged soldiers and sailors who served in the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Revenue Cutter Service during the American Civil War (1861-1865). We invite women who are passionate about history, patriotism, education, and veterans’ issues to join us!

Many women in New York will be able to find a Union Veteran of the American Civil War (1861-1865) in their family tree; they just need to know where to look. An abundance of free online vital records makes researching one’s family history easier than ever. Please see Our Links for some helpful resources. Kady Brownell Tent #36 is an inclusive, diverse group, and we’re proud of that. We enthusiastically welcome prospective members from all backgrounds and of all generations. If you want to join us, we’ll work with you to find a way to make it happen.

Our group holds four business meetings a year, from September through May, at locations throughout Long Island. Please visit Our Calendar to see where we're going to be next. Some annual activities we enjoy include President Grant's Birthday Celebration at the General Grant National Memorial (a.k.a. Grant's Tomb) in April and Remembrance Sunday in November at St. Thomas Church in New York City. We also plan group trips into Manhattan to visit Civil War exhibits at various museums and historical societies, and we support our local veterans' organizations. We’re grateful for so many opportunities to show our appreciation for our American patriots and demonstrate our love of American history.

Please explore this site to learn more about our passion and commitment to service. Questions about our tent may be sent to our email address: KadyBrownellTent36DUVCW1@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
