Current Goings On

 So last year at Thanksgiving I asked my brother-in-law, Jimmy, if he could build a birdfeeder pole that would keep the raccoons off of the feeders.  He says to draw him a picture.  I draw (pathetically) a vertical pole with a 5-pound coffee can around it and an X on the top to hold 4 bird feeders.  As the night went on (and the tasty beverages flowed), the plans got grander and it ended with, "Wouldn't it be great if it looked like a palm tree?  hahahahaha!"  Well, yesterday this oilfield pipe and car panel sculpture showed up!  I now have the coolest birdfeeder pole EVER!

My dad is doing better now, but recovery is not nearly as speedy as he had hoped.  Of course, he expected to be back to normal the day after surgery. Fortunately, he should be back up to speed just in time for my Aunt Dolly's visit at the end of May.

My dad had to have bypass surgery and is in the hospital.  Suck-o.  I know it will be for the best in the long run, but it's really hard to see him like that.

Final cake of Cake Decorating 101

After failing miserably two weeks in a row just making the rose BASE, it turned out I wasn't too bad at making the actual roses.  This is a butter pecan cake with caramel filling and frosting, topped by my first bouquet of frosting roses.  Cake Decorating 102 starts in May.

Flowers and clowns with bad posture

The azaleas were pretty for the last weekend of the Azalea Trail this year.  I'd never actually driven the official route before, so I was really impressed.  No yard of mine will ever look this nice!

 
Class 3 of Cake Decorating 101 had us creating "a cute and festive clown cake that kids will love".   Hasn't anyone at Wilton read It?  Everyone knows clowns are pure evil.  Why would I traumatize innocent children this way?

I'll just have a salad. 

First harvest of 2007! Here we have red leaf lettuce, mizuna, mustard greens, curly endive and broccoli. After tasting the arugula, I just left it there in the dirt.

Cake Decorating 101

So I see a flyer offering cake decorating classes and think, "That sounds like fun! And look, it's only costs $12.50." Lesson in class #1? The small print reads "plus supplies". So, $70 in supplies and 4 class hours later and look at these stellar results:

And we're back!

My IT guy, Fenny has engineered a way for me to edit my page again. Oh the joys of dial-up ISPs. Oh please, someone bring high speed internet access to the boonies. All hail the cable modem! Praise be to FIOS!

Lots of gardening going on here these days. We've got seedlings started everywhere and we've been planting things that won't do much for another year or two, including a peach tree, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, figs, pomegranates and asparagus.

Here's the newly tilled garden and swanky new fence Fenny put in for me. Note the hammock to the side. You're just not living if you don't have a hammock.

Note to self for future reference: ALL of the cherry tomatoes will sprout and live. They may even reproduce without flowering.

And since she didn't get a proper introduction here when we got her, here is Daisy!

Oh sure, she looks sweet and innocent, but look what happened to the last guy that crossed her...
