GPC tips

1. You can add Flash logo's to your site

Example

Get them here: http://www.freeflashlogos.com/flash-logos/index.php?fi=0&st=5&cat=FlashLogos&pg=1

You have to paste the HTML-code in the .htm file of the page you would like to see it in (save the page: file>save as>webpage). Then manually upload the file and link to it.

2. Bring more traffic to your site

You can do this With Google Adwords!

Or by using a (free) bravenet tool! Here you'll find all bravenet Tools, select "Traffic exchange" under "Promote Tools" and click "Get Yours NOW"! You should really check it out, I think ik can be very good for the traffic to your site!

3. Creating webpages in Excel

If you have a Microsoft Excel Document that you would like to transform to a webpage (graphs, tables,...) don't start to copy-paste everything. Just click file> Save as> webpage. Excel will create a fairly nice webpage (.htm file) which you just have to upload to GPC and link to it as a file :-)

4. Avoid Spam

Never type your e-mailadress on your webpages. So called "spam harvesters" find these and there will be no stopping the incoming spam...

Solutions:
- If you still want to display your e-mailadress on your website, you can do it in an image.
- Use a contact-me form instead of a contact-me link. For more info on creating a form using a third-party server, check out my tutorial number 12.

5. How to easily backup all your webpages

just download this tool: WinHTTrack Website Copier

start the programme, and fill in stuff like name of the project, category,... (not important).
When asked for a URL, just put your GPC homepage in (e.g.: http://jvanbaelen.googlepages.com)
Click NEXT a few times and the download of your website will begin (including ALL files and webpages!!)

 6. Adding a Clustrmap

Clustrmaps is a very useful tool to monitor your visitor's country. The result is displayed in a clean world map as you can find here (my website). To get a clustrmap, just go to http://clustrmaps.com/getone.php and sign up for free! They'll give you a html-code to paste in the html-editor of your GPC-editor. Once you've inserted this code, all the work is done!

GPC FAQ:

1. What is my Google PageRank?

Google Pagerank is the system that  Google uses for it's search engine: the higher your page rank, the higher you will appear when a Google search is done for an item on your site.

If you want to get to know your Pagerank, or display it on your site, have a look around HERE!

This site also gives you the code to display your pagerank on your site!

2. How come sitesearch doesn't work?

We must note tha,t before you can use Sitesearch, Google must have indexed your site. This can take a while: several weeks up to months! You can speed up the process though by having links to your site on indexed sites (indexed sites can be found using the google search engine, normally if you have a new website, google will not have indexed it, and you will not find it when you do a google-search for it). Another way to speed up the process is to add your URL with Google.
It's no Guarantee that your page will be indexed, but everything helps a little bit! :-)

3. How do I use a picture or image as a link to another webpage?

Open the Edit HTML window and then type the following code where you want to have the linked image:

<href="http://name of the destination page"><imgsrc="http://address of your picture"></a>

Ofcourse, you have to replace the two parts (name of the destination page) and (address of your picture)...  :-)

 4. Is there an easier way to get all my photo's online?

Sure there is! Using Picasa (by Google), you can select the photo's you want, and picasa then turns them into a nice websie :-) just select your photo's, and go to "Map" > export as a webbpage. (something like that, I have the dutch version on my pc)

Picasa will then generate .htm files, which you just have to upload to your GPC!

Get picasa RIGHT HERE! (100% free!)

Picasa also allows you to upload your pics to Picasa Web Albums, allowing you to create cool Flash Slideshows!
To do this, check out my tutorial number 27!

5. Can I use more colors for text formatting than GPC offers?

Yes! all you have to do is change the HTML-code, using your HTML-editor. the color of a piece of text is determined by a simple piece of code:
<font color="#ffcc00">

When you change the #ffccoo to something else, the color of the text will change :-)

You can find all HTML color codes here: http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm

6. How come I can't see the edit HTML button from Google Page Creator?

Try pressing F11 :-)

7. My solution for the 500-file limit problem

[ I know this FAQ has  become a little superfluous, since you can now store 500 files instead of 100 on GPC, but I'll leave it here for the people who still want to store more than 500 files :-) ]

One of the most discussed issues on Google Groups is the 100-file limit of GPC. Since there aren't any signs that Google is going to change their policy of limiting files, I have summed up a few solutions for the problem.

  • Create a second site. This I have done myself: I use one site for my Photo's (jvanbaelenhomepage.googlepages.com) and one for all the rest (jvanbaelen.googlepages.com). This can be a good solution if you don't have to  switch too often between the two edtiors. In my case it works fine: my photo's represent a lot of files, and don't have to up updated every week. Remember to put up good navigation between your two sites so that visitors don't know that they are acutally visiting two sites. (example of my stite)
You will have to use "link to a web adress" instead of linking to your pages if you wish to link from one site to another.
  • Find alternative hosting services. This can also be useful if you're going to host a lot of files, and you don't want to start up a second site. Personally I find the previous option a better one...
here are some popular (free) file hosting services:

    http://www.putfile.com

    http://www.flickr.com/

    http://picasaweb.google.com/

These are by far the best I think, you may find others on the Google Groups if you aren't satisfied with these...
  •  If you use a lot of graphs on your site (created in excel) it is better to save the .htm file with excel (file>save as>webpage) so that you have one file to upload with all your graphs in it, instead of uploading the graphs one by one...
  • Link to sites instead of files: you can find many files already on the Internet: link to them instead of uploading the files to your GPC!

8. How can I boost traffic to my site?

Bravenet offers the answer to this question: They offer two services that can help you increase traffic on your website:

  • A webring: link a bunch of sites to each other so visitors can browse through all of them.  A webring is usually formed with websites that have related topics. (disadvantage: you'll have to find other websites to join your webring)
  • Traffic exchange:  a tool that allows you to obtain visitors from other websites (mostly related website) if you, in exchange, supply the other websites with some traffic!

Get these tools from the list of Bravenet Services!
