Grand Forks Flood 2009

Friday, March 27, 2009

7:30am      River Level = 47.6ft

Approximately 1000 people have been asked to evacuate in Fargo and the National Guard is prepared to evacuate up to 20,000 more if necessary.  Uncertainty
is high as the National Weather Service admits there is no precedence for current river and tributary modeling.  The best guess at this point is cresting tomorrow
in Fargo just below 43 feet.  Road conditions have not stopped buses of UND from continuing volunteer efforts in Fargo.

11:30am      River Level =  47.74ft

Within feet of each other, these images above and below describe the mix of feeling and emotion in Grand Forks.  While a general calm and peace reign outside
the walls, public officials are preparing and starting to exert authority.  My interest in these pictures is intensely personal.  I feel our safety depends on accurate
assessment of the flood.  This guy suggested I not climb the dike to check on my neighborhood, so I had to do some skulking to get today's updates.

Pictures are definitely worth 1000 words...
