Basecamp

Welcome
The United Nations Climate Change negotiations being held in Poznan, Poland this December were the penultimate in the roadmap to a new global solution to tackling climate change.
I was selected as one of twenty people  from Australia to formthe Australian Youth Delegation 08.
Welcome to my website - the space in which I share the highlights, lowlights and insights from my participation in the United Nations Climate Change negotiations.
A big thank you to my sponsors and supporters for making this participation possible.

News Channels for tuning into the conference:
  • Basecamp: On this page find a collection of "short-takes" of events occuring throughout the conference period and my experiences within a global context
  • Journal entries: this is a personal account of my experiences
  • Media: This is a collection of actual media material (releases, transcripts, links to podcasts etc.). It won't be exhaustive as we don't have a formal Media Monitor software but it will capture the key pieces I personally am involved in creating.
I hope to maintain this structure throughout the conference, however as it is my first conference I may find it is ineffective and need to alter it.  Please feel free to send these links/pieces from these news channels to others.

Brilliant news on leadership displayed by those who should not have to lead ...

Least Developed Countries call on the world to stabilise global emissins to 350ppmCO2e

My key projects:

1.        Engaging in the technology and finance conference streams - fascinating example of rigorous biomethanation project in India today that encompassed major market, industry and regulatory development and was supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) .... ran out of time for a CCS event that sounded great but chatted to people leading research and analysis streams from the IEA ... there is a full day of IEA events at the nearby Sheraton Hotel next week where all the people leading their different projects will be there.

2.        Focusing hard on Pacific Islands and small country delegations in great need and greatly under-resourced at COP14. Brilliant development and strategic plan for impacting the equity of negotiations through supporting small country (big climate stake) delegations - we're leading it! Cooke Island already onboard! Yes!

3.        Marketing our side-event focused on Australia and it’s neighbouring Pacific Islands

Smaller updates

4.        Launch of the Australian Government Scorecard Friday

5.     Meeting Jan Adams, head of the official Aus Govt Delegation tomorrow at 2:00PM

6.        Spreading the word to youth about the brilliant mass dialogues

7.        Managing radio interviews - lots of fun

8.        Following up on opportunities from The Age, Sydney Morning Herald.

9. Hoping to find content in the Herald Sun after overlanders interviewed with me last night.

10. Gearing up for Major action utilizing the controversial tourism campaign: “where the bloody hell are you?”.

Conference Of Youth (COY)
I had only the slightest idea that a global "Campaign" mechanisation
was as in place to the extent it is.

The combined force of over 500 youth from over 57 countries instantaneously

changes your frames of reference of what is possible.
Scale, capability, reach ... and potential for cohesive global impact is
very real.

Youth are by far the largest stakeholder group at this negotiation
which speaks volumes in itself.

The fact that we are also the only stakeholder group who can really do
these creative, emotive, non-extremist actions and make compelling
visuals at the conference was one of the concepts that really
crystallised for me yesterday.

"There are three essentials that need to be in place by Copenhagen to unleash ambitious, concerted action through a ratifiable agreed outcome... "
1. How to generate additional financial resources and
2. The institutional framework to deliver on mitigation and adaptation and
3. Clarity on the nature of commitments.

Bangkok riots ... cancelled flight
Political energy before I've even touched down in Poland ... or left Australia! A number of my fellow Australian Youth Delegates are stuck in Singapore.
A distinct sense of global-connectedness struck me as my flight to London was cancelled due to major riots breaking out in Thailand.

I don’t know of any other time in history that young people have worked on such a global scale to fight, influence, and add inspiration to any social issue, such as they are now doing on Climate Change ...
