He spoke to journalism students on Feb. 5 about the journalism field, including changing technology. Profile: A Soldier in Afghanistan by Richard Finlan It’snighttime in the mountains of Afghanistan. Alpha Company had received word that Taliban militants were preparing an ambush. US forces retreat and begin to surround the mountain. A hulking gunship known as the AC-130 Spectre arrives and unleashes a torrent of bullets into the mountainside. The night sky lights up with explosions that illuminate clouds of dust and smoke. The sound is deafening. Soldiers at a relatively safe distance from the chaos watch in awe of the pyrotechnics they call “the show.” Specialist James Michael Lindsay leans over to his sergeant and asks, “Hey Sarge, can I eat some food?” “I turned my back and started eating my MREs (Meal Ready to Eat). When I looked up, everyone was staring at me like I was crazy,” Lindsay recalls, “I guess [the fire fight] wasn’t that interesting.” Lindsay is an unassuming soldier, to say the least. Sure he looks the part: tall, muscular frame, closely shaved head and arms covered in tattoos, but in an army full of “Type A Dominant” personalities, Lindsay is as cool as the breeze.
