Joshua Glasgow

Welcome

Thanks for visiting.  Most of my work addresses topics in moral and political philosophy.  Some of it concerns Kantian ethics, some of it concerns race, and some of it is not in moral and political philosophy at all.

My work on Kantian ethics stems from my commitment to Kantianism as the most plausible theory of what makes right acts right and wrong acts wrong.  My work on race resides at the intersection of public policy, metaphysics, the philosophy of language, and philosophical methodology, where I lean towards a branch of experimental philosophy (thus my collaborative work with a psychologist, Julie Shulman, on how we think about race).  All of these roads meet in my recently published book, A Theory of Race

Currently I am also working on a number of other projects, including investigations into the nature of racism, moral phenomenology, and why, keeping other things equal, it is better for life to get better rather than worse.  If you are interested in any of these projects, please contact me.  If you are interested in my already published work, click through to my Publications page.

I was tenured at Victoria University in 2007.  Prior to arriving at Vic in 2005, I taught at Occidental College and CSU-Bakersfield, and in the 2008-2009 academic year, I was a Visiting Associate Professor with the Philosophy Department at UC Berkeley, and I also taught at the University of San Francisco.  While New Zealand and especially Vic's excellent Philosophy Program have been fantastic, I am transitioning back to the US for personal reasons.  I have been fortunate to teach a wide variety of topics at each of these stops.  For some of the courses I have taught, click on through to my Teaching page.  This year I'll be teaching just war theory, race, culture, and ethics, and philosophy of law at Sonoma State University.

I am also one of the founding co-editors of PEA Soup, a blog dedicated to Philosophy, Ethics, and Academia.  PEA Soup was recently ranked as one of the top ten philosophy blogs.
