Joshua Finlinson was christened 11 June 1797 in Dalston, Cumberland England. He was the son of James Finlinson of Little Dalston, a husbandman and his wife Anne (nee Corry). [Printed Parish Registers of Dalston, Cumberland, Eng. (by corres.): "Chr. 11 June 1797 Joshua son of James Finlinson of Little Dalston, husbandman, and Anne his wife late Corry." ] He married Rachel Jefferson in the Episcopal Consistory Court of Carlisle England. The license was obtained 5 July 1820 and names Joshua Finlinson of Westward and blacksmith and Rachel Jefferson of Hold Cultram. They were married 8 July 1820 at Holm Cultram. the Bondsman was John Howe of Wigton, a clockmaker. [ Episcopal Consistory Court of Carlisle Marriage Licenses (by corres.): "License obtained 5 July 1820 by Joshua Finlinson, Westward, blacksmith & Rachel Jefferson, Holm Cultram. Married 8 July 1820 at Holm Cultram. Bondsman, John Howe of Wigton, clockmaker." ] He and Rachel had 5 children. She died 26 June 1829.
Joshua married in 1834 Mary Thomlinson [ Bishop's Transcripts of Thursby, Cumberland, Eng. "Marr. 18 Oct 1834 by lic. Joshua Finlinson of this parish, widower, & Mary Thomlinson of Westward in the presence of William Thomlinson & Ann Bouch." They were the parents of 4 children, 3 of whom lived to be adults. Mary Thomlinson, was the daughter of William Thomlinson and Susannah Robinson, was born on 6 May 1799 in West Curthwaite, Cumberland, England. She was christened on 7 Jun 1799 in Westward, Cumberland, England. She died on 6 Nov 1880 at the age of 81 in West Town St., Carlisle, Cumberland, and was buried on 9 Nov 1880 in Thursby
The 1841 census of Thursby, Cumberland, Eng., p.3 (FHL film #241280) gives the Joshua Finlinson household which included: Joshua Finlinson age between 40 & 44, blacksmith; Mary Finlinson age between 40 & 44; James Finlinson age 14; George Finlinson age 6; Susan Finlinson age 4; and Hannah Finlinson age 2. All were born in Cumberland County. In 1851 the census of Thursby, Cumberland, Eng., p.7 (FHL film #87112) shows the Joshua Finlinson household: Joshua Finlinson, head, mar., age 53, blacksmith master employing 2 men, born Dalston, Cumberland; Mary Finlinson, wife, mar., age 52, born Westward, Cumberland; Susan Finlinson, dau., U[nmarried], age 14, born Thursby, Cumberland; Hannah Finlinson, dau., age 12, scholar, born Thursby, Cumberland; Christopher Robson, Ap[prentice], U[nmarried], age 20, ap. blacksmith, born Carlisle, Cumberland; and Alexander McLord, Ap., U, age 17, ap. blacksmith, born Scotland. Joshua was a blacksmith and served later in life as the parish clerk. He died in Thursby, Cumberland England. [ Death certificate: "Died 30 Aug 1860 at Thursby Joshua Finlinson, male, age 63 years, of hydrothorax certified. Registered 31 Aug 1860 by the mark of Frances EDGER present at the death of Thursby."] He was buried in Thursby [Parish Registers & Bishop's Transcripts of Thursby, Cumberland, England "Bur. 2 Sept. 1860 Joshua Finlinson of Thursby, age 63." A headstone in Thursby Churchyard reads "Died 30 Aug 1860 Joshua Finlinson, age 63 years." 1861 census of the Thursby, Cumberland, England lists Mary Finlinson household lived in the Vicarage and included: Mary Finlinson, head, w[idow], age 61, proprietor of houses, born in Westward and Susan Finlinson, dau., unmarr., age 23, born in Thursby.
