Joshua Blakeney
is a journalist and activist originally from Surrey, UK living in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Joshua was the Media Coordinator of
Globalization Studies at the University of Lethbridge from September 2009 to October 2010.
Joshua earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of
Lethbridge graduating with distinction in April 2010.
He is currently studying
for a Master of Arts degree at the University of Lethbridge. His research
topic is The Origins
of the Global War on Terror: Academic Debates and Interpretive Controversies.
Joshua's research became national news after he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship to study the Origins of the Global War on Terror.
Joshua has published articles on a variety of topics including The War on Terror, 9/11 and 7/7, Marxism, Anglo-American politics, Israel-Palestine and Zionism, with a number of media venues including Global Research.ca, Rabble.ca, Voltairenet.org, Coldtype.net, The Canadian Dimension, The Canadian Charger, Veterans Today, The Sovereign Independent, 9/11 Blogger, sphr.org, and The Information Clearing House. His work has been quoted in articles in The National Post, Press TV and Rabble.ca.
One professor wrote of Joshua:
"Mr. Blakeney's essays have received wide distribution on the Internet. I expect he is by far the most widely quoted and published undergraduate we have at the University of Lethbridge. . .Mr. Blakeney is attempting in his apprenticeship to combine the journalistic and academic functions that are essential to public intellectuals."
Prior to entering post-secondary education Joshua backpacked and hitchhiked widely. He has visited more than twenty countries including Australia, New Zealand, Israel-Palestine,
Japan, Singapore, The Cook Islands, Fiji, Tahiti, and countries in Eastern and Western Europe.
He also lived and worked on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana each summer between the years 2000 and 2004. Whilst on the Blackfoot reservation Joshua worked at the Blackfoot Buffalo Horse Coalition, enjoying his first Montanan winter there from February 2003. In May 2008 Joshua visited Cuba for May Day and participated in the
International Conference of Solidarty on May 2nd at the Havana Conference Centre.
Joshua has been a guest on a number of radio shows. In March 2009 when British M.P. George
Galloway was barred from entering Canada Joshua was invited by Alert Radio to provide a commentary about the barring of the
British M.P. Joshua has also been a guest on The Train hosted by Dr. Denis Rancourt, NewsTalk 1010 hosted by Jim Richards, No
Lies Radio and American Freedom Radio
hosted by Dr. Kevin Barrett and Dateline Live hosted by Jack Blood.
Joshua has collaborated with activist Splitting the Sky who attempted a citizen's arrest on
George W. Bush on March 17, 2009. Joshua filmed and interviewed a number of
prestigious individuals during the trial of Splitting the Sky including former US attorney general
Ramsey Clark, former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Prof. Anthony J. Hall
and Splitting the Sky. The footage which Joshua filmed during the trial which
many dubbed “The Trial of Splitting the Sky versus George W. Bush” became the
content of his 2010 documentary “Arresting Impunity.”
Professor Anthony J. Hall and Joshua Blakeney co-founded the Citizens’ Broadcasting Cooperative in January 2010.
