Acid Rain Coursework

The Steel Story

This module tells the story of the production of steel, with emphasis on the redox reactions involved and the huge scale of the process.  You will learn about the large varieties of steels possible and discover how the composition of steel is related to the job it has to do.  The story of steel continues with the problems of corrosion.  We will start by learning about the redox reactions in the production of steel then go on to explain some of the properties of steel by using standard electrode potentials.

As well as introducing new topics you also need to revise areas already covered at AS.

Areas you need to revise are:
  • CI 1.1  Amount of substance
  • CI 1.2  Balanced equations
  • CI 1.3  Using equations to work out reacting masses
  • CI 1.5  Concentration of solutions
  • CI 2.4  Electronic structure: subshells and orbitals
  • CI 3.1  Chemical bonding
  • CI 5.1  Ions in solids and solutions
  • CI 6.1  Light and electrons
  • CI 9.1  Oxidation and reduction
  • CI 10.5 What is a catalyst?
  • CI 10.6 How does a catalyst work?
  • CI 11.1 Periodicity

You can find copies of the notes under the AS Chemistry section, and use your AS revision guide.
