Tendencies in Spain

Today the trendiest wine in Spain are the ones from Murcia! This region is not so characteristic for wines, such as Rioja or Ribera del Duero, however it has a long tradition in agriculture.  Lets analyze closely the tendecies of Spaniards regarding wines:
1) People are tired of Riojas and a bit less of Riberas, this means they are getting tired of Tempranillo and the traditional techniques that Rioja uses (barrels old or new with too much woody flavour).
2) The question was what is there new to try? Therefore most wineries started to include foreigner grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah or Pinot Noir. In white wines they focus their attention on Chardonnay or Riesling.
3) A consequently saturation of the market came after with all these different grapes. Some of the Spanish regions that planted foreigner grapes are Somontano, Penedes, some wineries in the Mediterranean region, in La Mancha and Rueda. Also the Spanish market received imports from Australia, Chile or South Africa saturating even more the market.
4) Spain being tired of foreigner grapes, turned back their interest to endemic grapes, which were located in small areas. This wineries did not change their old traditional grapes in order to plant the foreigner grapes (mentioned in section 2). This endemic grapes would be the Mediterranean Bobal in Requena, Monastrell in Alicante and Murcia, Grenatxe in Aragon and Priorat or Callet in Majorca.
5) The problem in Spain is the lack of interest in white wines, even though we have great endemic wines such as Verdejo, Albarinyos, Godellos and others that are used to elaborate sparkling wines: Macabeu, Perelada or Moscatel. Hopefully, soon Spain will recognize and admire their white wines, too.
