"My father was very sure about certain matters pertaining to the universe. To him, all good things--trout as well as eternal salvation--come by grace and grace comes by art and art does not come easy."
-- I really enjoy this quote because it puts us in a good view from their father and how he sees life. Everyone has a purpose in life, and he believes that his is for everyone and anyone that respects the rule of God and appreciates what the Lord has given us.
"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."
--Being my favorite quote in the book, this is not to be taken lightly. This is metaphor for all life. It ensures to me that everything happens for a reason. No matter how bad you think something might be, it is just the world testing you. This happens to tell us of our own strength, we all need to know out limits. All the tributaries in the river of life flow into one great picture, our life as a whole.
"In our family, there was no line between religion and fly-fishing."
--This quote is a great, fast, easy summary to cover the main point of the story. McClaen refers to religion and fly-fishing to be one and the same in the level of importance. I think that McClaen alerts to the readers that these two signify the true meaning of the story he is trying to tell.
