Headingley snapshots

an exhibition of paintings of trees and buildings in Headingley, Woodhouse and Meanwood

at HEART in Headingley, June 11th - July 29th 2011

The paintings in this exhibition have been done over the last two years. They show places near where I live and work - places that have been familiar to me over the years that I have lived in Leeds.

What I am trying to do in these paintings is to combine an interest in the abstract qualities of colour, space and pattern with recognisable images of real places. By choosing familiar scenes I hope that I get an emotional connection with the subject, and I aim for either a casual, "snapshot" composition or an iconic one with the tree or building in the centre of the image.

Already since I have made these paintings some places have changed - the poplars on North Grange Road have been cut down, and Bentley School has been knocked down and replaced with houses. For me, these paintings are a snapshot of a particular time and place and of my feelings about it.
