CAPT Michael Woodside, CAPT Lyle Thompson, and LT Billy Gene Creech were killed when their OH-6A (tail number 67-16025) was shot down while conducting a low level search for McDonnell and Greenfield in bad weather .
 
 LT Billy Gene Creech, from Chamblee GA, was the pilot of the LOH and was lost while searching for Greenfield and McDonnell.
 
CAPT Lyle John Thompson was the commander of the C BTRY 2/138 Kentucky National Guard. They were on Hill. 88 and a sister battery of the 1st Brigade. CAPT Woodside, in the capacity of Arial Observer, would often invite other officers to join him. It was a good way to see the lay of the land and the effect of artillery, both tube and aerial (4/77). He is listed on the VVM at 30WLN60.
 
CAPT Michael Woodside received the Silver Star, awarded for valor in combat. Captain Woodside also received the Army's highest award for personal courage in a non-combat situation: he was awarded the Soldier's Medal for entering a burning village and rescuing three Vietnamese children
