For independent reading, students will read about half an hour a day in class. They should also be reading an additional 30 minutes at home. Students need to remember to fill out their reading logs daily. They also need to remember to take accelerated reader quizzes. We will be completing assignments in a reading journal weekly.
Our first class novel this year will be The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Students will be completing assignments related to the book and should be bringing home a reading folder to show families throughout the trimester. Currently we are developing strategies for building word comprehension such as context clues, dictionary skills, and understanding affixes. We are practicing predictions and summaries. Students are also learning about story elements such as setting, character traits and point of view.
Scholastic News assignments will give us an opportunity to practice critical thinking, writing, and communications skills. These assignments will be going home weekly or every other week.
For History, we will be reading about primary and secondary sources, followed by early American civilizations, and then American Explorers. These readings will help students better understand text features and practice comprehension strategies for expository texts.
