A CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORIAN TRAPPED
INSIDE AN ANTHROPOLOGIST'S BODY

THIS LANGUAGE, MY LANGUAGE,
AND THESE DEFECTS, MY DEFECTS

With my son Martin on his graduation day at Carnegie Mellon University - Dpt. of Mathematics

what do I do every day?
the answer is just bellow

    LIVE AND BECOME

This site is dedicated to my late friend BORIS GILBERTSON (RIP)  of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

  DISCLAIMER

Anybody trying to get into my head by reading through this page and assuming the unassumable will be highly
disappointed because there is nothing inside my head.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MY TIME...SO FAR

If you just happen to remember this scene from Stanley Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey" when a very agitated Sahelanthropus tchadensis pounds and later throws up in the air a large femoral bone...well, yes, that was me in another life long ago. The fact is, I still am a primate...of the best kind, of course.

However, in this life, I have been successfully civilized...more or less...actually less than more. So please do not make a monkey out of me...I am a monkey!!!

How was I civilized? Now, that is a good question and the answer is: with MUSIC...classical music for the most part.

  ABOUT  LIFE  -  MY  LIFE

"...if you talk to a man in a language he understands that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart..."  (Nelson Mandela)

This is my language and if you talk to me as such then you will be talking to my heart and I to yours.

  ABOUT  ME

I believe that we shouldn't wish or pray for what we have never known, and what humanity has never known, that is, unbroken peace and unmixed blessing. NO - better to wish and pray for pity, for indignation, discontent, the will to see and touch, and the power to do good and make new.

I am an Anthropologist above all and Classical music is the language of my heart and passion. Within Ethnomusicology and Musicology I have found the necessary tools to express my ever present propensity to analyze just about everything I come into contact in the music field. That is, everything that has to do with music, its sounds, people and the social conditions that generate it.

I consider myself a very creative and imaginative person who is especially open to new ideas and ways of thinking about old problems. Normally I will approach a problem in the conventional or traditional way of doing things but then I will walk around to the other side and explore it from a different and hopefully novel perspective. What's new and the unexplored is what interest me the most.

And what is new I view with a high sense of anthropological detachment and then become a witness to my own life. I like to go on adventures of the mind that are both dangerous and daunting always with a contemplative attitude and detachment from preconceived ideas.

Many people inhabit this world but lets face it, there is only one of me and that can not be changed although change is part of my life every day's dynamics.

SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

And teach we must, for we owe all that we are to those who have been before us and to all those who are yet to come...if they ask.
