Work Information

"You have to learn WHY things work on a Starship." -- "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan"

Current Position: Senior Software Engineer (aka Teradactyl) for Teradata Corporation (since 1990).

I specialize in all phases of multi-terabyte data warehouse architectures, using the Teradata RDBMS. I am currently working in Teradata R&D for the Teradata Partner Integration and Technical Consulting (TPITC) group, supporting ISVs that access Teradata as part of their application. Immediately prior to my position in R&D I was a Principal Consultant in the Teradata Retail Industry. I also have very extensive experience in Communications Industry data warehouses. And I’m a Teradata Certified Master V2R5.  E-mail to request my resume.

A terabyte in this context means a terabyte of raw user data -- not just the size of the DASD farm. I have worked at sites that now have up to a petabyte (1,000 terabytes) of DASD in one Teradata configuration. Please visit Teradata Success Stories and Teradata Case Studies for examples of how Teradata in used by our customers. I have contributed to a number of these successes.

At the Teradata Partners Users Conference I have jointly presented "Advanced SQL Techniques for Single Pass Ordered Analytical Functions." I also have presented “Long Tails, Black Swans, and Their Impact on the Data Warehouse,” and additional presentations on using SAS and SAP with the Teradata database.  I have a blog on the Teradata Developer Exchange site to continue the discussion about EDW and the Long Tail/Black Swan concepts.

A quick list of pointers to some free (unsupported) Teradata tools and other excellent Teradata reso
