Basic LS/VTEC info What is Ls/Vtec? Also known as the frankenstein motor, all it is the mating of a honda block that came from the factory as a non-vtec and adding a vtec head. LS means non vtec, any B series motor without vtec are put in this catogory .While the GSR 93 B17A1 & 94-01 B18c1, TYpe-R B18c5, 94-97 del sol B16A3 and 99-00 civic SI B16a2 are the only motors with the vtec capable heads, thats where the vtec part comes in. Note the vtec heads listed are usdm the jdm motors have a lot more vtec heads available there jus not listed. The non-vtec honda motors came in a slightly larger displacement than it's more popular and sought after vtec brother motor, and with the addition of a vtec head larger torque gains could be had, but proper guidelines need to be followed to make this motor a reliable for daily drving. Due to the larger displacement from the non vtec motors meant rod failure problems arise due to the higher RPMs the vtec heads need to gain full potential. Check out the link to your left Best LS/Vtec Info And Build Guide for a better in depth explanation of all i've written. Why DO it In the First Place? The reason for the popularity in doin this build is the majority of hondas/ acuras out there are non vtec , and in the Honda World either you got it or you don't , and VTEC is what everyone wants, kinda like a hemi for a dodge. So with that in mind havin a vtec in your honda is must. Yes there's a large group of those who are perfectly happy without it or claim that it's way overated, jus go look at prices of vehicles equipped stock with vtec, the price is close to double the amount, also due to supply and demand the prices for vtec equipped cars are outrageous and highly sought after, so building a LS/VTEC has become quit popular in the Honda world, due to the the huge amount of non vtec motors rollin around. The price to build yourself one is far cheaper then goin out and purchasing a vtec equipped honda. |
