 My name is Joe Kovacs and I created this web site with Google Sites to showcase my freelance work.
My two great passions in life are communications and traveling. Though I traveled somewhat during high school and college, the experience that truly shaped my thinking came from service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sri Lanka in the late 1990s. I was teaching English as a Foreign Language for about nine months but an escalating civil war eventually made the Peace Corps blow the whistle and call all volunteers out of the pool. Originally a New Yorker, I moved to Washington, DC and led public relations and marketing initiatives for several nonprofits. My first freelancing assignment was with WorldView Magazine, the membership publication of the National Peace Corps Association. Since then, my writing has appeared in the travel sections of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Miami Herald, and on LiteraryTraveler.com.
Shortly after moving to Colorado in 2007, I began freelancing for the University of Colorado. I interview faculty, research the university's community initiatives and cover events of interest to alumni, administrators, faculty and students. When I travel, I try to get into only about as much trouble as is safe (I'm not sure if that makes sense!). In addition to Sri Lanka, I've been to Guatemala, Ireland, Peru and Mexico. I have seen a good deal of the United States too and would have to say that the most beautiful place I've ever seen is here at home in Alaska's Denali National Park.
