
Joe Ortiz Associates is a full-service communications and public relations company, founded by radio and television personality, Joe Ortiz. He is a veteran journalist with over 40 years experience as a radio and television talk show host, radio news reporter, newspaper columnist and blogger.
The Coachella Valley, California native has the distinction of being the first Mexican American in the US to host an English-language talk show on a commercial radio station, beginning in 1971 on KABC-AM in the city of Los Angeles.
Joe is currently a journalist and free-lance writer for numerous media throughout the nation. He manages several blogs as well as writes on a variety of issues including business, community and public leaders, authors, sports and entertainment personalities, theology and many other significant topics.
Joe has conducted radio and television talk shows at KABC-AM, KLOS-FM; KCBS Television; he was the Chief News Reporter for the nationally syndicated (Pacifica Radio) KPFK-FM NEWS; and hosted his Prime Time With Joe Ortiz show, which aired on KPPC-AM in Pasadena and KPZE-AM in Anaheim. He also co-starred with comedian Cris Franco on a 6-9 a.m. drive-time show, Mornings With Joe & Cris, at KPZE-AM. He is a member of both the National Association of Latino Journalists and (one of the original founding members of) the California Chicano News Media Association. He is the current publicist for the Chicano Radio Network, the largest Latino-themed radio conglomerate on the Internet
In addition to numerous awards and commendations from local, state and national elected officials, he received a Golden Mike Award as a member of the Best News Team while working at KPFK-FM, and the Angel Award for Best Talk Show Host in Los Angeles while at KCBS Television. In the November 1989 issue of Hispanic Business, he was named as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the country for community service and his broadcasting excellence, along with other Latino luminaries, such as Rita Moreno, Paul Rodriguez and Geraldo Rivera.
As a publicist and public relations consultant, he has developed and implemented major publicity campaigns for many companies, civil rights leaders and other individuals and community-based organizations featuring various celebrities and sports personalities including Rita Moreno, Milton Berle, Tierra, El Chicano, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Marco Rodriguez, Richard Yniguez, Cris Franco, Boy George, Ricardo Montalban, Manny Mota, Rosa Parks, Tom Flores, Jim Plunkett, George Lopez, Pia Zadora, Freddie Fender and many others. He has provided public relations services to numerous community organizations, including Boy Scouts of America, Manny Mota International Youth Foundation, HollenbeckYouth Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Salesian Boys and Girls Club, and the Tom Flores Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament. He has provided public relations assistance to many community organizations dedicated to anti-drug abuse and gang violence. He has also written stories about as well as managed the press relations for many elected officials including former State Senators Diane Watson and Art Torres, former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, and Los Angeles City Councilmen Richard Alatorre, Robert Farrell and John Ferraro. As a publicist for over ten years for the Miller Brewing Company, Johnnie Walker Black Label and The House of Seagram, he coordinated public relations for hundreds of their sponsored events, including major Mariachi festivals, rock concerts and other special events.

Prior to forming Joe Ortiz Associates in 1988, Joe worked at various community and public relations and case management positions including Job Agent and Parole Officer for the State of California; public information specialist for the Greater Los Angeles Community Action Agency; administrative assistant to Los Angeles City Councilman John Ferraro; teacher at Riverside City College; Riverside and Los Angeles Unified School Districts; Director of Employer Relations at South Bay College; and National Director of Corporate Development for MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund).
Educated at several colleges in California, Ortiz studied at Riverside City College, East LA Junior College, San Fernando Valley College, University of California at Riverside and UCLA, and now holds state credentials authorizing him to teach Public Relations, Public Affairs Broadcasting, Human Relations in Business, and Personnel Training and Related Occupations. The Coachella Valley High School grad has taught at various schools at both the Los Angeles and Riverside Unified School Districts, Riverside City College and Ramona High School in Riverside.
He served as the public relations chair for the Tom Flores/Boy Scouts Celebrity Golf Classic and the Los Angeles Raiders/Boy Scouts Invitational Golf Tournament for 12 years, and is the current president of the Official Tom Flores Fan Club. He also served as the public relations chair for Los Angeles Dodger’s Coach, Manny Mota and his International Youth Foundation’s annual awards banquet for 8 years. He provided networking and publicity services to many other charities in the greater Los Angeles community. He has been an advisory member of numerous community and civic organizations including the board of directors for the Boy Scouts of America, the Manny Mota International Foundation, and the Latin Business Association.

While Joe always had great ability as a communicator throughout his youth, he never realized that his commitment to helping the poor and homeless would make him a pioneer in the broadcasting and public relations arena. His many years in both fields resulted in the formation of his public relations consultancy. Joe Ortiz has served as the president of the Official Tom Flores Fan Club for the last ten years, working to get the former quarterback and coach of the twice Super Bowl Champion Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders into the NFL Hall of Fame. Tom Flores coached the Raiders to Super Bowl victories in Super Bowl XV and XVII. A former NFL quarterback (the first Mexican American to play that position in professional football), Flores served as both coach and general manager of the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Raiders Radio broadcast booth in 1995. He has served in that capacity for 14 years.
