grading examinations are held on average every three months. There is no obligation to attempt a grading; only if the students feel they are ready. If in any doubt they should speak to their sensei for advice.

Grading examinations are a source of finding out the progress of the students. The three disciplines, more often refer to as the 3 K's of shotokan karate are the main elements of each grading. The students will be asked by the examiner(s) to perform their required techniques within the given syllabus. The 3 K's  are Kihon (basic techniques), Kumite (sparring) and Kata (form).

Kihon: The examiner(s) will ask the students to perform a set of core techniques. The examiner(s) will observe and ensure they are done correctly.
Kumite: The examiner(s) will ask the students to pair up and they will have to perform pre-arranged sets of attack and defence and counter attack. For the higher grades it involves semi-free sparring.
Kata: The examiner(s) will ask the students to perform the required series of movements, demonstrating the attack and defence against imaginary opponent(s).
Spirit: All students must perform all their tasks with full spirit and the kiai (spiritual shout) is loud and strong.
