WASHINGTON – Senator Joe Lieberman met today with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Agim Ceku, to discuss the ongoing negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo under the auspices of the United Nations, United States, Britain, Germany, France, Russia and Italy. Over the past seven years, Kosovo has been run by a interim administration under the UN, and although the last round of talks in Vienna created no movement, the prospect of an independent Kosovo seems closer than ever.
“I am proud to join those who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the citizens of Kosovo and surrounding nations can live their lives in peace,” said Lieberman. “An independent Kosovo, where all ethnic groups can peacefully co-exist, is an important step in stabilizing a region of the world that has been torn by conflict for so many years.”
In 1998, Senator Lieberman was a vocal advocate of U.S. military intervention to stop the slaughter of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, and he joined Senator John McCain (R-AZ) in sponsoring a resolution authorizing the use of force against Serb dictator Slobodan Milosovic, which was undertaken successfully by U.S. and NATO militaries.
