FFI's Terrorism Research Group

FFI has conducted academic research on terrorism and political violence since 1999. In recent years we have chosen to specialize in the study of transnational radical Islamism. With four full-time fellows and several research assistants, FFI is currently one of Europe’s largest academic communities working in the field of militant Islamism.

FFI aims at providing in-depth academic studies of contemporary jihadi movements. We are particularly interested in ideologies, strategies, operational patterns and processes of radicalisation. Because all militant groups must be analysed as part of a local political context, our studies often have a geographic focus. We have developed a particular expertise on jihadism in Europe, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Maghreb region. FFI is also recognized for its research on radical Islamism on the Internet. In addition to our academic production, we run a continuous documentation project of jihadist propaganda which has generated a vast collection of open-source written and audiovisual material on violent Islamism.

FFI's Terrorism Research Group places great emphasis on objectivity, originality and detail and therefore relies as much as possible on primary sources. We value area knowledge and language skills very highly, so all of our staff speak Arabic or Urdu and travel regularly in the Muslim world.
