FAIRFAX - Andrew Nachison, Co-Founder and President of iFocos visited Professor Klein's Online Journalism class on Thursday, March 19 to discuss the evolution of journalism and how embracing new technology is becoming a necessity, as many previous speakers have stated before.
According to its website, iFocos classifies itself as "a media think tank" and its main goal is to "help individuals and organizations worldwide understand and use expanding media and communications technologies both to innovate in business and to make the world better through media."
Lofty goal indeed.
But Nachison believes it is the way of the future. iFocos is committed to creating a viable means of communication b etween the media and the public and Nachison is ready to back it up. "Media and communication is the connective tissue that links society and culture," he said.
But what of our future? As with many previous speakers, not everybody shares an optimism that journalism is going in the right direction. There was even a discussion on whether or not what we are learning in our journalism classes is necessary. Besides, what good are these skills without a job where you can utilize them?
Nachison doesn't think that will be a problem. Instead of things like the Internet completely taking over journalism and killing off all newspapers, he believes that better stories will come from their usage. He believes that the Internet isn't a new tool to kill current news outlets, but rather a new tool to help enhance the current news outlets.
Just because we think we're heading down a certain path doesn't mean we are. As Nachison eloquently put it, what we believe isn't necessarily what happens. Let's hope that's true. |
