Dictionary.com defines modern dance as: "A style of theatrical dance that rejects the limitations of classical ballet and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling." It is this combination of movement and feeling that the JHU Modern Dance Company seeks to achieve. The Modern Dance Company was founded in 1981 at Johns Hopkins University. It has been led by Ms. Marilyn Byers since its founding. It is comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students in addition to some faculty/staff members. Participation in weekly classes is open to anyone affiliated with JHU, regardless of dance experience/ability. Classes are free. Marilyn teaches class Tuesday nights in the Mattin dance studio, where she focuses on building technique. Thursday nights, the Company offers classes led by Ms. Larissa Byers. Larissa's classes focus on building strength, stamina and endurance. Interested dancers can attend either one or both of these classes on a weekly basis. Saturday
mornings Company members lead additional classes. They work more on
technique and review concepts and combinations learned throughout the
week. The Company holds an annual spring concert each year in April in addition to performing at various events throughout the year. Performing with the group is not a requirement for taking classes. The performing company is a separate entity and will rehearse in addition to taking weekly classes. During the spring semester especially, it is an extreme commitment, and mandatory rehearsals may be held up to five times each week. We try to work around members' schedules because we feel strongly that academics comes first, but deciding to perform is time intensive. The performing Company has studied in New York with the Nikolais-Louis Foundation for Dance. Typical performances throughout a given school year are: Orientation dance showcase (organized by the Company, annual event since 2005), Chinese Moon Festival, Fall Festival, Cultureshow, Spring Fair, various benefit concerts, the Mattin pARTy, and our annual spring concert. |
