About Me

My autobiography.

My name is Justin Brett Gartin.  That's my driver's license photo above.

I was born in Corydon, Iowa.  But, I grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa.  During my high school years, I was into two things: Boy Scouting and computers.  Brian Hof, Connor Reynolds, and I formed a programming group called MicroHof.  We made small games and utilities in BASIC.  Some of them can be found in the downloads section.  The picture above is our logo and our mascot.

I was a class speaker for Marshalltown High School's class of 1999.  After high school, I attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.  Even though I got good grades, I felt like trying something else for a while.  After 2 1/2 years, I decided to leave Gonzaga in search of something more adventurous.

In 2002, I joined the United States Army.  I served as a 63Y10 (track vehicle mechanic).  The Army gave me the chance to travel the world--from the Middle East to Europe.  After 3 years in the Army, I decided to move on.

In 2005, I entered Iowa State University in order to finish work towards my B.S. in Psychology.  I moved back home and commuted to Ames.  It's funny how seven years and a couple trips around the world landed me right back where I started--Marshalltown, Iowa.

In the summer of 2006, I worked at Mitigwa Boy Scout Camp.  This was my fifth summer (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006) working there.  I earned my NRA instructor certifications and served as the shooting sports director at camp.  Some of the materials I developed are available in the projects section.

I graduated from Iowa State in December of 2006.  In early 2007, I started working as a software tester for a company here in Marshalltown.  The work is interesting and challenging.
