The Criminal Justice Academy was established in 1990 though a unique partnership between the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento City Unified School District. The Academy was first implemented at John F. Kennedy High School and is a four-year career technical program in the field of criminal justice. Our program objective is to turn out high-energy, productive citizens who give back to their communities. The career goals vary among our students, but they all share a common drive to meet high standards in academics, citizenship, attendance, physical fitness and community service. In its 18 years, the program has grown from 15 to over 100 students. In fact, the Criminal Justice Academy at John F. Kennedy has been used as a model for similar academies both in Sacramento Unified and across the country. The specially designed academy coursework meets District requirements for U.S. Government and Driver Education. Other coursework includes computer proficiency, ethics, laws of evidence and arrest, history of law enforcement, patrol techniques, report writing, and drug and gang awareness. This coursework acts as the building blocks for the program’s academic goals…those goals include improved English and communication skills, higher SAT scores and preparation for college success. The academy’s physical training class promotes lifetime fitness, teamwork and practical skills. The four areas of emphasis are police and self-defense tactics, weight training, cardiovascular training, and team sports. The academy instills pride, professionalism, respect, and team ethics in its students. Graduates are goal-oriented and ready for any career or college they choose. The academy graduating class of 2010 boasts 100% acceptance into college programs of their choice.
