Jewellery Artisan: Inspired by earth & sea

Kathryn MacDonald
celebrates nature by creating jewellery from earth materials. Stones and shoreline have always held her imagination and she pleasures in wrapping them in copper and sterling silver. This results in magical amulets, pendants, necklaces and earrings to adorn your body – each a unique mini-sculpture. My new studio is equipped for silversmithing, which opens many possibilities; in addition, I am a member of the Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club and have cut and polished some of the stones in my jewellery.

Juried art shows

Expressions 2010, John M. Parrott Art Gallery, May 6 through June 3, 2010 "Robin's Nest," sterling silver in the splash technique (where sterling silver is melted and poured into cold water for an organic result) to which I added three turquoise nuggets in the natural indentations. The thong is made of black silk and blue cord, finished with sterling cones and toggle and more turquoise nuggets. The necklace is 20 inches long.

Expressions 2009, John M. Parrott Art Gallery, May 7-28 “Mask with Whiskers,” cuttlebone cast pewter (sans lead) with braided thong and sterling silver findings). The image was carved from cuttlebone that had been cut in half lengthwise. While carving, mostly with dental tools, it is as if looking into the mask, as if about to put it on. A hollow is made at the top for pouring and the remaining half is held in place by wire. The pewter is heated with a torch and quickly poured into the top hole, cooling almost immediately. The mask was cleaned with files and hung from a braided leather thong, which was decorated with a pewter feather and a sterling silver clasp.
