The National Education Association

Purpose of the NEA: "[To] elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching and to promote the cause of education in the United States." (NEA)

Founded in 1857, the NEA is a volunteer driven association which gives support for our schools and educators on four levels: Local, State, National, and International.
  • At the local level:  The NEA has over 14,000 affilliate groups which address the education related issues of their local community. (NEA)
  • The NEA has 51 affiliates at the state level (a complete list can be found here).
    • One afflilate per state and The Federal Education Association
    • Each affiliate works with it's respective government to create policies which protect and support their fellow educators; they work to allieviate the  financial and even legal strain on public school employees and the schools themselves.
  • Once a year NEA delegates meet in for an official annual meeting.  The 2008 annual meeting was held in Washington D.C. and the Washington Convention Center.  More information on this meeting and other events can be found below by clicking on the "Events" link.
  • On the International level the NEA keeps up with global education policies and news through it's membership in Education International (EI).  More information on this subject can be found here.
