Costumes

Hit up your local Thrift Stores for old coats, sweaters, Tshirts and other items you can get cheaply, paint , add or remove fur, fabric, or whatever to make fabulous.

Also look at this website for some inspiration, regardless of gender: http://tribes.tribe.net/mensplayawear and http://playaliciousplaywear.tribe.net/

and Wheylan, a local designer who sells his wares - custom fit! http://www.wheylan.com/

**if you want to make your own stuff, and are a bit stuck as to what to do, please email me and we can brainstorm some ideas. It helps if you have a photo of something you've seen out there that you'd like to try to have for yourself.**

also, check out the crafts projects page on this site for more details on fun easy things to do.

Bikes, and City Layout

There are a variety of options for bikes. The city will be much wider than last year, and about 300' more from the Esplanade to the Man... so a Bike is a good way to get around.

If you bring a bike on the NYC container, it MUST be in a box.

Light Up your bike, decorate your bike, bring a simple lock, these tips and more at:

All about Your Tent; and keeping it from blowing away.

Dust

Out at Burning Man, dust is a fact of life.  You will get Dusty. Your Stuff will get dusty.  If you have a tent with mesh sides... cover them.
learn more here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Seal-your-tents-mesh-panels/

If you can, put out a carpet in front of your tent. Leave your shoes outside your tent. Don't forget to nail the carpet down - regular stakes will do.... but for your tent you will want something heavy duty.

Rebar

Tent stakes generally do not cut it for keeping a tent secured to the ground. When the dust kicks up.... whoo boy can it get nasty. So please get your tent staked down over 12" and put a decorative covering on top --
like a tennis ball with a hole in it, or the pretty foam things they use for pools, or you can be really inventive and make up one of these

Nails

Your Mileage May Vary - but some people use 9" camping nails instead of REBAR. CinemaGirl reports that they are easy to pound in, with a flat nail like top, and easy to remove - much less hassle than Rebar removal.

Spectacles

I don't know about you, but my glasses are my only good pair, and I'll be damned if I bring them to the playa to get scratched up or run over by an art car. Bring an old pair...

Or if you have your scrip & PD (ask your optometrist) you can check out any number of cheap sites for glasses - via the blog http://www.glassyeyes.com -- I've even seen transitions lenses in Purple (not cheap)

There are also a variety of goggle sites out there (but you can't be more than 2.25 Sph I think)

How to get your Stuff from NJ to the Burn.

In 2008 there were two highly recommended ways to get your stuff from A to B

http://www.videogasm.com/burningman/bigoletruck/ (King Of Prussia Area)
http://www.nyccontainer.com/ (Jersey City Area)

Please read these websites thoroughly and follow all the Rules. Your Stuff, and the Safety of Other's Stuff depends on it!

In the Sad Event that those options don't work for you, or that these options are not available in 2009 :
You can Try Greyhound or Amtrak Package Express, and meet your stuff in a City along the way. I have also heard that REI will ship things to certain stores for pick up. You can also try to pack it all into 2 suitcases ---

Most of the airlines these days are charging for a second suitcase, so do your research on what works best for you...

Getting to Burning Man

Ok, now that your stuff is safely on its way, how do you get there?
Well, one thing to do is to Drive. That's going to take a few days, a lot of Gas, and a taste for Adventure. There was at least one person who did it from Jersey in 2007, and I did the trip to Mecca, I mean Black Rock City in 2008.  I'm glad to connect with you if you are indeed interested. If you do drive, PLEASE PLEASE make sure you get your car looked over before you go.

Most people fly to Reno or San Francisco Area, rent a car, RV or minivan and then go from there. for more information on Ride Share and Driving Directions check out

One thing I can share - Your stuff will always take up more room than you thought. Pack Light.

Gifting, and the 10 Principles...

You may have noticed that in all the other newsletters I have highlighted one of Burning Man's Ten Principles. http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html

These are a relatively new invention to the event (in the last 10 years), but I like them! And I like how they are guides for participation at Burning Man, and how to bring the burn home year round. I'm calling out Gifting because so many people think that the city is built on Barter - I'll scratch your back if you give me a cigarette... or something of the sort.

Well, rather than load up on lots of useless trinkets that you'll give to someone, think about giving a gift that truly represents who you are in your radical self expression. (ha ha ! another principle...) It is the biggest gift of all to give of yourself, not something made somewhere else with dubious labor practices. Look into who you are, or want to create. You may give the gift of Song, or Listening, or a Hug. You may give your time to a stranger, help keep a tent from blowing away, etc. All of these are gifts, and are what keep me coming back for more year over year.

My Advice is to look to what is important to you and find a way to share that.

If you're stuck for gifts, I always bring extra batteries, ducktape, first aid, stuff that lights up bikes at night (glosticks) , chapstick and some booze for DPW (who stay way after we are gone cleaning up the city)
