What you need to know from the syllabus

It's Simple 3Rs

  1. I expect that your student will show RESPECT: for members of our classroom and school community, the subject matter, and themselves
  2. I expect that your student will take RISKS: with their thinking and effort, and in developing a variety of skills.
  3. I expect that your student will take RESPONSIBILITY: for our classroom community, his or her actions, and his or her development as a student and a person.

Terms You May Hear
  1. Annotation- Essentially note taking.  Your student was provided a document that gave them several options for taking notes.  I ask that students use of these styles UNLESS they speak with me individually.
  2. Study Tool- I will give your student a study guide before each test.  I ask that they create a study tool based on one of the strategies that I handed to them.  Simply reading through notes or the book is not successful for most students.  If your student feels that this assignment is not effective for them, please have them meet with me.
  3. MORE (modular open response essay)- The same thing as a "five paragraph" essay, but may not have five paragraphs.  Format of the essay should be Introduction paragraph with a thesis, body paragraphs, and summative conclusion

Policies

  1. Extra Help- Please know that I am available for your student multiple times throughout the day and after school.  Occassionally I do have appointments, but generally if a student wants to see me, they can.
  2. Late work- On most occasions, I do accept late work at a 40 percent penalty.  Please know this INCLUDES major projects, papers, etc. To receive permission to turn in work, students must meet with me outside of class.  I reserve the right to NOT accept late work.
  3. Communication- The vast majority of my communication is between your student and myself.  I have found this to be the best way to empower these young adults, and help them to understand that their achievement is exactly that, THEIRS.  Occasionally, the "young" part of their age does rear its head and I will contact you for support and assistance.  If you EVER feel that your students needs are not being met, or that he or she is not telling me something that I need to know, please feel free to contact me.  The best way is via email.
  4. If you would like to request a conference, please fill out this form.  I will contact you to confirm the place and time of the conference.
  5. Click here to sign that you have read and reviewed the syllabus with your student.
